With safety as its top priority, ALEM, in collaboration with the DHF, is setting new standards for Dock Leveller Safety. From delivering essential training to influencing key regulatory updates, ALEM is paving the way for a safer, compliant industry.

President at ALEM

ALEM (Association of Loading and Elevating Equipment Manufacturers) is celebrating a successful partnership with DHF (Door & Hardware Federation) in launching a Level 2 Award in Dock Leveller Safety. This initiative highlights the urgent need to update EN1398, the standard for dock levellers, to align with current safety requirements.

ALEM has long represented UK manufacturers of loading bay equipment, such as dock levellers, scissor lifts, and vehicle restraints. It has worked closely with the government, Health and Safety Executive, BSI, and other organisations to improve design, installation, and maintenance safety.

Since October 2023, ALEM and DHF have jointly offered the Dock Leveller Safety Award. Ten courses have run so far, with 130 participants completing the one-day program, which has been praised for its real-world relevance and comprehensive coverage.

Commenting on the course’s success, ALEM’s former President, Richard Spinks, said, “ALEM identified a need for dock leveller safety training and collaborated with DHF to develop this successful one-day course. DHF’s expertise in industrial door training made it the natural partner to deliver this course.”

Participant feedback has been positive, with comments like:

• “I now better understand what to look for when servicing a dock leveller.”

• “Very informative and well- explained.”

EN1398:2009 – Dock Leveller Safety Requirements

ALEM’s working group is reviewing EN1398:2009 with BSI to update the standard. This review will conclude on 18 October 2024, with the CEN deadline on 2 December 2024.

Looking Ahead to 2025

Next year, ALEM will continue to monitor EN1398 updates, providing expertise as needed. Additionally, with EN1570-1:2024 now cited for lifting tables, ALEM will guide members to ensure compliance by March 2026.

As part of BMHF and the European FEM, ALEM plays a key role in setting industry standards, including EN1570-1 and EN1570-2 for lift tables. ALEM’s active participation in these bodies keeps its members informed of European regulatory changes, helping them to counter risks from non-compliant equipment and maintain high standards.
