It’s been a year of change and growth. In June 2024, CFTS welcomed Rob Fisher as the new CEO. His knowledge of business management and leadership has brought a fresh perspective, one that aligns with the mission to continually raise standards in Thorough Examination.

Over the past decade there’s been a steady 10 percent rise in the number of Thorough Examinations undertaken by CFTS members. Remarkably, in the last 12 months that figure has grown to 17 percent. There are now more than 800 depots around the UK that are signed up to the scheme. This growth is a testament to the hard work of the team and the trust placed in CFTS by the industry.

One crucial aspect of Thorough Examinations is the legal responsibility that falls on employers and equipment owners. It is their duty to ensure that all lifting equipment is regularly inspected by a competent person and examined in line with both LOLER and PUWER regulations. While CFTS members provide the most comprehensive examinations available, it is ultimately the responsibility of the business to ensure that these inspections are carried out to the correct standard. By choosing CFTS-accredited examiners, employers can be confident that they are fulfilling their legal obligations and protecting both their workforce and their operations.

In 2024, CFTS also welcomed Simon Gribble as the new Central Region Technical Manager. With over 40 years of experience in the materials handling industry, Simon brings a wealth of knowledge to the role. His responsibilities include offering technical support, training, and innovative solutions to engineers across the region. Simon’s expertise ensures that CFTS members continue to deliver high-quality Thorough Examinations, maintaining the organisation’s excellent standards.

In 2025, CFTS will launch a mobile app designed to simplify the Thorough Examination process for accredited members. Accessible to all, regardless of their current systems, the app offers flexible checklists for various equipment types, and will allow members to schedule examinations, upload data, and receive reports via a dashboard. End users will also be able to download their own reports. With offline functionality and the ability to include images, the app is set to improve inspection efficiency and move members towards fully electronic processes.

This app is just one of several projects aimed at further establishing CFTS as the go-to authority for safety inspections for industrial trucks and lifting equipment.

The CFTS team will be exhibiting at both LAMMA and IMHX in 2025. These events present valuable opportunities to engage directly with the thousands of businesses and professionals attending, demonstrating the critical role of Thorough Examinations in ensuring safety and compliance.
