Westhof BIO, one of Europe’s largest organic freezer facilities, embarked on a strategic initiative to enhance its storage capabilities to meet the growing demand for organic produce.

Movu Robotics has played a crucial role in revolutionising Westhof BIO’s deep-freeze storage operations by integrating Movu atlas pallet shuttles, significantly improving the efficiency and scalability of organic vegetable preservation. The cutting-edge system, featuring Movu atlas pallet shuttles within a stow racking silo, handles over 5,000 pallets at -24°C, ensuring smooth and reliable storage and retrieval processes. With a throughput of 60 operations per hour, the system aligns perfectly with Westhof BIO’s goals of optimising production, improving warehouse efficiency, and reducing environmental impact.

Movu atlas pallet shuttles, operating across six levels within the 60m x 32m x 17m silo, are designed for high-density storage, maximising space utilisation by reducing the need for multiple aisles. The installation was carried out in partnership with Körber, responsible for the end-to-end integration. The scalable system allows seamless expansion during peak seasons, easily accommodating fluctuations in demand while maintaining optimal storage conditions. Movu Robotics’ plug-and-play automation system stands out for its quick setup and minimal maintenance, ensuring minimal operational disruptions.

These modular systems offer unparalleled flexibility, allowing installations to start small and expand or downsize as needed.

Stefan Pieters, CTO of Movu Robotics, stated: “This Movu atlas installation for BIO-FROST is a true example of simple and easily accessible plug-and-play automation that delivers efficient, flexible, and reliable goods flow. Its scalability provides BIO-FROST with automation that handles peaks and adapts easily to future requirements.”

Movu is dedicated to standardisation and simplification, reflected in their solutions that minimise complexity and cost while maximising efficiency. The modular design acts as building blocks, enabling quick rollouts and easy upgrades, which are critical for maintaining high-performance standards in fast-paced environments like Westhof BIO’s deep-freeze storage facility.

The facility incorporates advanced features, such as oxygen reduction fire protection systems and ergonomic workstations, enhancing both safety and efficiency. These innovations, combined with the seamless integration of Movu atlas shuttles, have significantly improved Westhof BIO’s ability to meet year-round demand for high-quality organic vegetables.

Looking ahead, Movu Robotics continues to push the boundaries of automation technology, planning further enhancements to ensure that companies like Westhof BIO can maintain their competitive edge while upholding commitments to sustainability and operational excellence.
