Sales Director, Mezzanine Systems at MiTek
Geoff Green, Sales Director, Mezzanine Systems at MiTek spoke to Warehouse & Logistics News.
What are your best-known products, solutions or services?
MiTek is highly experienced in the integration of mezzanines with automated and robotic technologies. In fact, about half of our solutions are designed to integrate with automation, with the rest being steel platforms for storage and workspace. We supply both hybrid and cold-formed mezzanine floors, with each solution tailored to the precise needs of the customer in order to achieve the optimal balance of efficiency, cost, flexibility and sustainability.
How many markets are you in?
This year, we’ve installed mezzanines in Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, UK and USA. Our expertise in country-specific building regulations makes us an experienced partner when it comes to realising mezzanine projects to a consistent standard worldwide. We retained our position as the UK’s top mezzanine supplier – as judged by leading industry analyst, Plimsoll – for the ninth consecutive year, although growth has been particularly strong for us in continental Europe recently. Our customers are active in diverse sectors, from construction and manufacturing to retail, fashion, e-commerce and distribution.
In what ways does your company stand out from its competitors?
MiTek has a reputation for seamless mezzanine delivery in very large-scale and integrated warehouse projects. Automation often brings special requirements for mezzanine floors – they may need to be stronger to support the weight of the systems, more rigid to allow for the sensitivity of automated kit to deflection, or even engineered to minimise electrostatic resistance. The MiTek team excels in project management and is committed to delivering a schedule that works for each customer. For example, a recent project for a dairy products manufacturer required meticulous planning, as daily operations needed to continue as the seven-storey mezzanine was constructed. In addition, since the warehouse doors were not large enough, various plant had to be dismantled and lowered through the roof!
Another aspect that differentiates us from some of our competitors is the quality of our solutions. We have an experienced SHEQ Manager and ISO 9001 (Quality) accreditation, as well as ISO 45001 (Health & Safety Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) certifications. What’s more, by using reliable and rigorously vetted local contractors in our agile supply chain, we can avoid production backlogs and ensure consistent quality standards, while also minimising our carbon footprint.
What are your most recent product innovations?
We are continually investing in R&D to enhance our existing products and bring new solutions to the market. For example, as part of a recent project, our team developed a new staircase design that enables pre-assembly to make installation easier and faster. Given that the new distribution centre in question – which was for a UK high-street retailer and featured almost 25,000m2 of mezzanine – had some 350 staircases, this innovation secured considerable time and cost savings.
What are the major trends and developments affecting your category and your customers, and how are you responding?
Labour scarcity in the logistics sector continues to lead increasing numbers of warehouse operators to adopt automation, which usually requires a higher point load capacity. In particular, we are working on increasing numbers of AutoStore projects.
Often our hybrid mezzanine design is sufficient for such automated systems. Where it isn’t, we can make design modifications in the areas where extra point loading is required, such as putting hot-rolled sections underneath the decking. An alternative approach, which affords more flexibility for the future, is to install MiTek’s Mezzanine7 solution, which provides increased strength everywhere, enabling future changes in mezzanine use. The fact that MiTek offers both hybrid mezzanines (which are constructed using hot-rolled primary beams and cold-formed joists) and purely cold-formed steel platforms (which require less material, improving carbon footprint and securing faster lead times) means that customers can save costs by using them in combination within large projects.
Can you tell us about any recent customer contract wins or projects and how you helped the customer meet their challenges?
Last year we supplied our largest mezzanine project to date – totalling over 100,000m2 and reaching 24m in height – for UK retailer, Next. This five-storey solution required integration with various automated technologies including overhead garment conveyors, tote conveyors, spiral conveyors and elevators. To facilitate the installation of spiral chutes into voids between the floors, our design team engineered special supporting steelwork to help lift and position them. More recently, we’ve supplied a mezzanine solution for Direct Corporate Clothing, the UK’s largest independent workwear supplier. This was designed to support an AutoStore system with almost 130,000 bins and 60 robots. The project was in partnership with a leading integrator and we were able to import their 3D system models directly into our software, ensuring accuracy from the outset. In addition, we developed an innovative bracing solution for this mezzanine that ensured the required rigidity at an affordable cost.
Are you investing in staff training and skills development and can you give examples?
MiTek provides an online learning platform called Degreed, which offers a huge selection of training courses to our 6,000+ employees worldwide. We also offer a range of live courses and apprenticeships, fund relevant courses from external suppliers and provide product training at our own Innovation & Training Hubs. In addition, we recently trained 10 staff members from various departments to become Mental Health First Aiders.
What work are you doing in the area of sustainability?
MiTek has worked with an independent structural engineering consultancy to develop a mezzanine carbon calculator, which can give clients an understanding of the embedded carbon in their design at the quotation stage. There is increasing demand from customers for green steel (from electric arc furnaces) or recycled steel (originating in coal-fired blast furnaces). If the customer engages with us early enough, we can generally deliver blast furnace steel that is up to 89% recycled. Of course, we also offer our more sustainable, cold-formed mezzanine solution as an alternative to our traditional hybrid system.
How future-proof and flexible are your solutions?
By their very nature, mezzanines offer companies the opportunity to future-proof their operations by maximising use of their available space and avoiding the cost and disruption of either relocation or building modifications. Investing in the right mezzanine solution can also help to future-proof operations by allowing firms to manage higher volumes and implement increased levels of automation. For MiTek, future-proofing is an integral part of our project process. This involves discussion with the customer to find out their current requirements and future growth plans. To maximise the potential of tapping into our expertise, companies should engage with us as early as possible in the life of their project. This allows us to influence the whole package – building, system integration and installation – in a way that will optimise the value of the mezzanine solution. We also offer retrofitting services, adding or extending mezzanines to modernise older warehouses and systems.
What exhibitions can we expect to see your company exhibiting at in 2025?
Next year the MiTek team will be exhibiting at LogiMAT in Stuttgart (11-13 March), the Tomorrow’s Warehouse events in Coventry (16 May) and Manchester (30 September), and IMHX in Birmingham (9-11 September).
How would you sum up your company in three words?
Leading Mezzanine Partner.
