Dale Paterson, Managing Director at Exporta spoke to Warehouse & Logistics News.
What are your best-known products/solutions/services?
We’re best known for our range of sustainable transit packaging which includes popular products such as Plastic Pallets, Pallet Boxes, Containers and Crates. We do offer a range of services alongside such as product design, warehouse consultancy and recycling advice. Our next day delivery is very popular with our customers.
How do you think your industry sector is performing at the moment?
I think there’s never been a more important time to introduce sustainable warehousing methods and responsibly sourced plastic solutions that can be re-used, meeting the needs of many businesses. We’re seeing more and more customers who have switched from more traditional warehousing methods that utilise single use products.
How many markets are you in and what is your biggest market?
Due to the nature of our products, we can really supply any industry as there is always a need for logistics and the products that go with it. We do focus on a few key industries such as automotive, manufacturing, food processing, and the pharmaceutical industry. Our team thoroughly enjoy the individual challenges and processes each industry presents. In some cases our products are relevant across several different industries and at other times we supply very specific solutions for industry specific uses.
In what ways does your company stand out from its competitors?
We’re the first company in the UK that supplies the range of products that we do to be certified as carbon neutral. We don’t like to just promise on sustainability, we like to make sure we walk the walk when it comes to the environment. Beyond that, our service is second to none with quick response, samples, site visits and expert advice. Trust and reliability is what Exporta is all about and the team really embrace that. We provide one of the most diverse ranges available from one supplier of returnable transit packaging due to our large number of available product moulds.
What are the major trends and developments affecting your category and your customers, and how are you responding?
We’re seeing a lot of businesses looking to utilise returnable and reusable products to operate their systems as single use products continue to be phased out. This is of course something our range of products is ideal for. Beyond that we’re seeing an increased demand for product tracking solutions. Recently we’ve dramatically increased our offering in this area as there are so many different options that suit different scenarios.
Can you tell us about any recent customer contract wins or projects and how you helped the customer meet their challenges?
Throughout 2024 we have worked with many leading retailers on the storage and movement of goods in their ‘back of shop’ and state of the art distribution centres. Working in this increasingly competitive environment, it’s key that efficiencies are maximised in their logistics and we’ve worked successfully to supply suitable product for manual and automated systems.
How do your business levels in 2024 compare to previous years?
We’re happy to see continued growth in our key product ranges, particularly in the containers and crates category as more and more businesses demand these products. The need for a reusable product that can be recycled is evident to see.
What is your strategy for growth and success in 2025?
As we embrace 2025, we are continuing to focus on the products and services we’re particularly good at and can keep on bringing efficiencies, savings and innovations to our key customers and prospects.
Are you investing in staff training and skills development and can you give examples?
Staff training and development is core to our values as a business. Our team have the opportunity to train in areas they choose in all departments, from marketing to the warehouse team. Several of our employees have completed diplomas in recent years relating to their role with the company. We’re very proud that our staff members tend to stay with the business for a long time and we want to ensure that continues.
What work are you doing in the area of sustainability?
As mentioned previously, we are a certified carbon neutral company having achieved a PAS2060 accreditation. Ongoing maintenance goes into our ISO 14001 accreditation that we’ve had for many years now.
We also focus on our own internal behaviour when it comes to sustainability as we really believe an internal culture of sustainability is the best start in any businesses journey to net zero. Our distribution centre has solar panels on the roof, we have a strict internal recycling policy and we recently installed electric car charging points at our company headquarters.
What sets your company apart from others?
The winning formula of our People, Products and Processes.
Will you be investing in your premises over the next 12 months?
We have recently expanded our main warehouse to include a new large storage facility. Over the next year our northern site will continue to develop with further extensions. We’re delighted we’re in a position that we need to extend our main distribution centre due to the growth we’ve seen.
How future-proof and flexible are your solutions?
With continual investment going into R&D, supplier visits, and keeping very close to industry trends, we are satisfied that Exporta is at the forefront of new ideas, designs and methods bringing them to our customers to keep them at the cutting edge for modern solutions in logistics.
What exhibitions can we expect to see your company exhibiting at in 2025?
In 2025 we’re attending Intralogistex in March, and IMHX in September. You can come and see us on stand 352 at Intralogistex and stand E94 at IMHX. Our team thoroughly enjoying meeting existing customers and introducing Exporta to new faces so please come and say hello!
