Since the UK’s departure from the EU, the UK freight forwarding and logistics sector has been beset with challenges, from increased paperwork and border delays to regulatory changes and cost pressures. These have been a constant feature of 2024. The new year will see more changes to rules, regulations, and procedures.

Director General at BIFA
While some of these challenges may diminish over time as businesses adapt, the long-term effects of regulatory divergence and labour shortages will continue to shape the logistics landscape into 2025 and for years to come.
2024 saw BIFA continue with a number of initiatives to address the skills gap in the logistics sector.
In addition to a comprehensive portfolio of training programmes, BIFA partnered with schools and other educational organisations to raise awareness of career opportunities.
Our collaboration with TRS delivers Skills Bootcamps aimed at equipping individuals with essential logistics skills. Our Young Forwarder Network continues to enable participants to enhance their careers by providing opportunities to support their professional development.
2024 saw BIFA help its members adapt to the growing demand for sustainable logistics.
The work of a newly established sustainable logistics policy group helped identify and report on environmental-related issues which may in the future have an impact on our members’ businesses. Our cooperation with Pledge is designed to help BIFA members to demonstrate the actions they are taking to obtain thorough visibility of their carbon footprint and that of the shipments they handle.
In 2025, BIFA will be encouraging the government to focus on simplification, harmonisation, and cooperation to help reduce the friction caused by Brexit in the logistics industry and help build a foundation for more resilient and efficient cross-border trade in the future.
BIFA will continue to enhance membership engagement in the new year and support its members through a variety of services and initiatives aimed at enhancing their professional capabilities, advocating for their interests, and ensuring they remain competitive in the logistics and freight forwarding industry.
2025 will see us hold our first national conference for many years. And our Forwarders Village will be centre stage once again in 2025 at the Multimodal event.
There will also be ongoing development of our training department as part of the evolution BIFA will go through in order to best support our members and the industry.
By offering these comprehensive services, BIFA will support its members in enhancing their professional capabilities, staying informed about industry developments, and navigating the challenges of the logistics and freight forwarding industry.
