With the warehouse automation market predicted to double by 2029, AI is set to increase its foothold in this key sector.

Artificial Intelligence is creeping into many aspects of modern life. Although sometimes mired in controversy, the results of AI are mostly positive and often awe-inspiring. The UK is punching above its weight, with – according to a recent article by Forbes – twice the number of AI-based companies than any other European nation and, according to government research, around one in six UK organisations having embraced at least one AI technology.

Warehouse automation market set to double

Warehouse automation can help to solve some of the most challenging issues in intralogistics today, such as labour scarcity, fulfilling e-commerce orders cost-effectively and building resilience in supply chains. AI is already demonstrating its potential in warehouse automation – boosting the accuracy of manual fulfilment, enhancing the prediction of required inventory, enabling robots to learn from each pick and from each other, and so on. With the global warehouse automation market predicted to more than double over the next five years – from almost $26 billion in 2024 to over $54 billion by 2029 (Mordor Intelligence) – the scope of AI in logistics automation is set to be huge.

Attracting Gen Z

AMHSA members continue to add to the arsenal of innovative technologies that enhance supply chain efficiency, value and sustainability. An important, and often overlooked, additional benefit is the transformative effect of these technologies on the nature of labour in warehouses. With distribution centres tending to feature repetitive and physically demanding tasks, careers in logistics are often rejected by Millennials and Gen Z. The growth in automation, robotics and AI is not only helping to solve the industry’s labour shortages but also creating more attractive roles in IT & software development and robot programming & deployment.

Promoting automation

The voice of automated intralogistics, the Automated Material Handling Systems Association (AMHSA) has 65 members, who together provide the lion’s share of solutions in the sector. By distributing market intelligence, participating in training workshops, attending networking events and collaborating on customer projects, AMHSA and its members facilitate the sharing of best practice and promote the benefits of automation across the industry.

Meet us in 2025

Along with many of our members, we will participate in a number of UK exhibitions next year, including IWLEX on 3 & 4 June at NAEC Stoneleigh; the Tomorrow’s Warehouse events in Coventry (16 May) and Manchester (30 September); and IMHX at the NEC on 9-11 September.

If your company is interested in joining AMHSA or finding out more about the benefits of membership, contact Matthew Jones on 07517 610514 or visit www.amhsa.co.uk.
