First established in 1981 as a sole trader business, the Steve Porter Transport Group has evolved and grown into a major niche player in the UK Transport and Logistics industry.

MalcolmFollowing the acquisition of Red Funnel Distribution Ltd., Steve Porter Transport Group currently employ in excess of seventy full-time staff across five sites in Southampton, Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight, as well as staff embedded in a major manufacturing plant in Hampshire. Steve Porter Transport Ltd. operate 40 vehicles and 80 trailers from around 145,000 sq.ft. of warehouse, office and yard space.

WLN – What’s the most exciting thing about your job?

Creating business relationships through partnership type agreements and seeing the profile and reputation of the business grow year on year.

WLN – Who inspired you most in your career?

Not any one individual. I believe that anyone with lots of experience can offer you something. The best advice received came from a retired haulier who said “when you get busy work harder.” There are several sorry tales out there, but this advice guards against complacency and failure.

WLN – If you were an item in a warehouse, what would you be?

A really good bottle of red wine held in bond. Perhaps, a great Bordeaux Premier Cru like Chateau Mouton Rothschild.

WLN – What brought you to this industry?

My background is accountancy, and this led me into logistics.

WLN – If you had to do it all over again, what would you do different?

I’m a positive person and never spend any time looking back but always look forward – in this game you are only as good as your last delivery.

WLN – What’s your favourite pastime?

I’m a keen sports fan. I enjoying watching and playing. The misery of supporting Newcastle United is a cross if have to bear, and I also enjoy playing golf and cricket.

WLN – What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you?

WLN – Do you have any hidden talents?

I have the amazing ability to be able to avoid having to undertake DIY projects.

WLN – Who would be your favourite party guest?

Kevin Keegan would be my ideal guest. I believe that there is nobody more genuine in sport.

WLN – What is the greatest luxury in your life?

Good health.

WLN – If you won the Lottery, what would you do?

I would live for part of the year in the South of France and undertake a project to create a university on the Isle of Wight for both academic and sporting subjects.

WLN – Who or what makes you laugh?

Anything by Monty Python.

WLN – Do you have any secret ambitions?

Yes, to watch England beat Australia at an Ashes test match in Australia.

WLN – What’s your favourite holiday destination?

I’m a massive fan of the South of France.

WLN – Who or what do you detest the most?

I detest ignorant and arrogant people. There really is no need for it.

WLN – What would be your advice to someone thinking about coming into the industry (apart from “don’t do it”)?

Enroll on a management-training course with one of the large logistics groups. This will give you the best possible start, particularly if you then move onto an independent transport company.
