While staffing challenges in the transportation and warehousing industries look to be easing, managers are being urged to make employee engagement a priority, or risk further recruitment challenges.

A new report from workforce management experts Quinyx, offering key insights and advice for business leaders within these sectors, has revealed that 50% of employees feel undervalued, with 65% believing that their bosses see them as a ‘temporary or disposable resource’.

The Quinyx report of UK transportation and warehousing employees found that they are more likely than staff in other sectors to view their career as long-term – 60% intend to stay in their job over the next one to three years, compared to 53% of retail workers and just 36% of those working in shipping and distribution.

Toma Pagojute, Quinyx’s chief HR officer, says: “Our findings point to a significant disparity – with transportation and warehousing employees wanting to remain loyal for the long-term, but feeling that their bosses view them as disposable. When staff feel like this, it’s highly likely that they’ll look around at other options.

“And with many workforces still under-resourced, losing key staff isn’t just a minor inconvenience, it can have lasting business impacts.

“The good news is there are numerous steps that can be taken to turn things around – improving staff communication, introducing internal reward schemes and feedback processes, such as employee surveys; these can all make a big difference in making staff feel that their work and their opinions are valued.

“Businesses should also consider offering more flexibility – our research revealed that over a quarter (29%) of workers in the sector would prefer a job with a flexible schedule over a better paid role, and this rises to 40% of female employees. Flexibility doesn’t have to mean drastic changes to scheduling – introducing small changes can make a big difference to workers.

“Additionally, it’s worth looking at how technology, such as workforce management software, can help to plug staffing gaps and see where resource is best spent. Apps like ours enable employees to implement shift changes themselves too; this might feel like relinquishing control but it helps to empower staff and offers managers more time to focus on the bigger picture.”
