A massive shift to digital solutions is now well underway in warehousing but, as more companies make the move from manual to automated processes, they may risk leaving their employees behind. Bosses need to prepare their staff accordingly to embrace new technology as an opportunity, rather than perceive it as a threat. It takes both clear communication and a willingness to learn – and especially around the cultural shift to slick, best-of-breed WMS from an onerous and manual paper-based system. Companies may want to start by developing a list of actions they have to take before implementing the WMS, including all the digital advancements, new dashboards and other systematic procedures they’ll need to learn. They should determine what to measure and how, stating goals clearly and breaking them down relative to change management. It is advisable to prioritise help and support, while promoting training and professional development.

Interesting to hear how CoreRFID has enabled Vitafoam, one of Europe’s leading foam manufacturers, to automate its processes, speed up deliveries and improve customer service. With the new system, RFID labels are attached to all finished foam blocks, which can be automatically detected by fixed readers or staff using handheld readers at various stages of production and storage. Foam blocks exiting the production area (after curing) or entering or leaving the warehouse facilities can be identified quickly and easily.

Great news as productivity, accuracy and revenue are all up by 20 percent at a thriving UK electrical business thanks to LYDIA voice-picking technology supplied by Ehrhardt Partner Group (EPG). The eye-catching figures make for exciting reading at electrical component supplier Niglon. As an added plus, this investment in technology did not require the customer to implement a new Warehouse Management System (WMS).

It is most encouraging to see I.T. providers innovating to help the warehouse sector move into the future.
