The volume of e-commerce orders has been increasing for several years, with demand escalating since last year due to the Covid-related lockdowns. This means a huge number of items are returned, which has stimulated the need for mezzanine floor solutions. Another driver of demand for strong mezzanine floors in warehouses is the increased amount of heavy automated equipment being used in the industry.

Well done to United Storage Systems which installed a multi-tier mezzanine floor for its client Readie Construction in a turnkey project which featured pallet gates, bespoke full-height mesh handrails and a twin goods lift. Tips for maintaining the safety and integrity of a mezzanine warehouse floor include ensuring that the area is always well lit, installing handrails along the outer edges and utilising pallet gates if pallets are to be shifted on and off the floor. Both ground and mezzanine floors need to be subject to regular safety inspections to check for wear and tear and suggest any repairs or replacements required.

Congratulations to ICE which has launched the ICE Co-Botics range for cleaning warehouse floors. ICE Co-Botics is a complete range of autonomous vacuums, scrubber dryers, and sweepers in various sizes, suitable for a whole host of environments. The range includes the Eco Bot 75 which uses its 23 sensors, 2 cameras and 3D LiDar to accurately map and clean up to 3,000 m2/h.

Good to hear Twintec installed an SFRC jointless floor slab with a coloured dry shake topping, enhancing durability and resistance to abrasion and impact. Client AAH Pharmaceuticals required the design and construction of a 17,700m2 steel fibre reinforced concrete ground floor slab with red dry shake finish. The specification demanded a high tolerance floor with a surface that would last for years with little or no maintenance and would meet FM2 classification for floor flatness.

Warrington-based ASG Services worked with online grocery company Ocado to help prepare its 563,000 sq ft Customer Fulfilment Centre in Erith, South East London for operations.

Having provided durable internal line marking for its CFC3 site near Andover, ASG was entrusted to provide around 3.5 km of diamond shaved line marking at Erith. Diamond shaved line marking is the most durable and accurate form of line marking available in the UK. It involves using specialised equipment to ‘shave’ an area of the concrete floor surface to a depth of 1-4mm, thus removing any seal or powerfloat coating and reveals virgin concrete and a rough surface which helps the paint system to key more firmly.

It is encouraging to see suppliers rising to meet the demand for strong mezzanine flooring.
