A Sidetracker multi-direction reach truck has enabled structural steelwork engineers Adstone Construction to upgrade the storage system at its Worcestershire premises, increasing warehouse capacity and efficiency. The truck has now been used by the company for over six years without a single breakdown.

Before the arrival of the Sidetracker all Adstone’s steel stock was stored on the floor and accessed by overhead crane, which often caused delays while material was found and handled. To solve this problem, Adstone decided to install 40 linear metres of cantilever racking, 4.5 metres high, designed to suit the dimensions of a Sidetracker SO25AG truck with an overall width of only 1400mm. The racking is in three runs with 1500mm aisles with rail guidance.

The racking is used to store all the company’s flat bar, which is usually six metres long and from 50mm x 6mm to 600mm x 20mm wide x thick. Each type has a separate location on the racking, making it quick and easy to find, and stock control has also greatly improved, according to Keith Vaughan, of Adstone.  The full 360º manoeuvrability of the Sidetracker enables it to handle the long products within the restricted space available, avoiding the need for large turning areas.

The S025AG model Sidetracker supplied to Adstone has 600mm long forks, which retract within the overall width of the truck, and a lift capacity of 2500kg. It is powered by twin electro-hydraulic power units through high-torque hydrostatic transmissions, with the motors automatically running singly or together to suit the demand. Reliability is a high priority for Adstone, and the simplicity and durability of the electro-hydraulic design was an important feature when it chose the Sidetracker.
