Q. What has been the secret of Briggs success in the face of a changing market and the worst recession in half a century?
A. Briggs is one of the real success stories in the UK MHE industry. From its creation in 2006, it has turned a business that was losing £10m per year into a financial success story, trading profitably, generating cash and retaining customers.
The Briggs business model is based around its people: the right people working on the right tasks for the right result. This principle extends throughout the business and one of the key points is the skills of the people in the business. Technology is advancing at an ever-faster pace with new solutions to old problems, especially true at the sharp end of the business with the Engineering team.
In Short Term Hire one of the key benefits has been our dedicated fleet of over 3,000 machines so we can select the right machine for a customers’ application and provide “tailor made” hire solutions.
Q. You’re a national supplier but your head office is in the Midlands. How do you support non-local customers?
A. Having our own delivery fleet of Low Loaders operating nationally gives us greater flexibility to hit tight deadlines and be competitive.
As we have over 350 service engineers nationwide, a Briggs engineer is never more than 3-hours away from an emergency call out. Not only is this a great reassurance to the customer, it is backed with our Briggs guarantee, the only service guarantee in the industry.
Having highly skilled engineers is essential and we do this with constant investment through Briggs’ in-house training team. From the latest HSE legislation to routine FLT license renewals and new product training, every engineer knows that they have the training and skills to meet and beat the challenges they face day-to-day.
Q. What is the Briggs difference for your customers?
A. The Briggs approach is to develop a relationship for long-term, mutual benefit. This can only be achieved by having a deep and intimate understanding of the customer and their business. Every customer has a unique business and deserves a unique solution that meets their need. This is the Briggs benefit of understanding and minimising the lifetime cost of a solution with the maximum productivity for the customer.
A perfect example is the work we’re doing in the rock music industry. We’re providing fleets of lift trucks to set up concerts for some of the biggest names in the industry. What do we do that’s different? We are competitively priced. We deliver on time. We do what we promise.
Q. What advantages does a good quality STH fleet give to Briggs customers?
A. Having a modern up to date fleet brings advantages like greater flexibility across the product range, lower maintenance costs, fewer breakdowns and customers get to utilise the latest technology without long term commitment.
Our Short Term Hire fleet supports our national customers by containing machines that suit their applications. This enables our customers to hire additional machines at short notice for peak periods. An example is one of our customers in the retail sector who regularly hires over 150 machines to meet their busy period.
Q. What makes Briggs’ STH fleet different to others?
A. I believe that having a flexible workforce in our Workshop operation (when preparing the machines for hire) is crucial. Timing is essential and turning machines around quickly (sometimes hours) is the key to our success. However, this goes hand in hand with Briggs having a reliable transport operation which can meet customer demands.
We have a team of eight hire controllers dedicated to our STH operation who have a wealth of experience and can deal with the most complicated request. They deal with over 500 enquires a month, are all trained on new products and regularly have to deal with tight deadlines.
We make it easy to do business; having a dedicated freephone number (0800 26 26 81) and can advise availability immediately whilst the customer is on the phone. We can also set up the hire agreement and e-mail this within minutes of taking the call, providing a fast, friendly and professional service that customers can rely on.
