timcon-approved-trainer-logo1The Timber Packaging and Pallet Confederation (TIMCON) has launched a dedicated training programme to enable its members to strengthen the knowledge and skills of their employees and remain at the forefront of the industry.

Having recognised the importance of industry training, TIMCON has launched the modular programme to provide comprehensive information and learning tools for packaging and pallet operatives. Sections from the course have already been used to inform and develop National Occupational Standards for qualifications in the woodworking sector.

Available in downloadable format, the programme is easily accessible and can be conveniently taught on site by a designated member of staff.  It consists of twenty-nine modules (six of these are compulsory) and covers a broad spectrum of industry aspects, which include health and safety, legislation compliance, and material knowledge and understanding. The programme especially assists members in meeting their health and safety requirements and also gives support and guidance to the trainer as it provides information on how to implement and structure the modules.

Upon completion of the modules, the employee and the company receive certification including use of the quality TIMCON training mark.

The comprehensive programme enables participants to meet and maintain their health and safety requirements as it develops employee’s knowledge base relating to safe working practices and ultimately creates a safer working environment.

John Dye, President of TIMCON said: “We understand the importance of improving industry skills and ensuring our members are aware of ever changing legislations and issues. Our training programme provides an excellent resource to enhance knowledge, add credibility and most importantly to encourage progression and passion for our industry. We are urging our membership to take advantage of this free service we have put in place, and subsequently to use the scheme logo to show the importance that they, like us, place on encouraging excellence in the workplace.

“We are the voice of our members and equally, they are the voices of the industry, and it is crucial that the repairable, recyclable, and reusable qualities of wood are recognised, understood and delivered.”

The training scheme is an addition to the proactive tools, which TIMCON already provides to its members, to help them be aware and confront ongoing industry issues.  TIMCON stands firm with a clear message, that in terms of health, safety, economic and environmental benefits wood is still the clear preferred material of choice for the pallet and packaging industry.

* National Occupational Standards are developed to help employers, businesses, employees and individuals. They identify the skills, knowledge and understanding required in specific sectors and inform nationally recognised qualifications.
