It’s been a year of celebrating the past, focusing on the present, and looking to the future at the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF), which marked its 40th anniversary in 2023.

As the international membership organisation promoting the safe and effective use of powered access equipment, IPAF has plenty to be proud of over the last four decades.

IPAF grew encouragingly in the lead-up to our anniversary year, with a record increase in membership in 2022 and a corresponding rise in training uptake.

An incredible 2.5 million operators have now completed training to gain their Powered Access Licence (PAL Card) to date – a testament to the international recognition of our standards.

And collectively our members are making the industry safer through our accident reporting initiative.

We received 746 accident reports from 34 countries in 2022, using the data to promote safety through improved training and raised awareness of common hazards.

Our ‘High Voltage!’ campaign was launched in response to a significant increase in electrocutions and electric shocks since 2015, helping to make mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) users aware of the hazards when working near electricity.

We also issued guidance on loading, unloading, and transportation of MEWPs after the data revealed a significant number of people being injured or killed during the process.

In this anniversary year we have also placed a huge emphasis on the people who make our industry what it is, offering support and development through a number of initiatives.

Last year Karin Nars, Managing Director of Dinolift, became the first woman elected as IPAF President.

Leading in a male-dominated industry, Karin has made celebrating and encouraging diversity one of the central themes of her time in office.

Her Women in Powered Access initiative is all about celebrating women who work in the industry and inspiring the next generation.

Alongside developing industry employees through enhanced training, we have been offering guidance to member organisations on how they can attract and retain the workers of the future by developing healthy and inclusive workplace cultures that reflect the values of today’s generation of young people.

So with a growing membership, our deepest-ever understanding of safe working practices, and a clear vision of our future workforce, we’re proud of where IPAF is in this milestone year.

We encourage new members to join us and be part of the next stage of our evolution.
