Award-winning construction subcontractor The P & M Group has further enhanced its eco credentials with a major industry sustainability award.

The temperature-controlled building specialist was awarded the Cold Chain Climate Champion award at the Cold Chain Federation’s Sustainability Awards for 2023 this week.

At a ceremony in Warwick, the award was collected by Joanne Moore, recently appointed Group Sustainability Manager alongside company chairman Andy Moon.

The P & M Group is headquartered in Gloucester and contains composite panel construction specialist ISD Solutions, sister companies PLG Insulations and doors and metal fabricator QuayTherm Manufacturing, as well as a division in Australia and Midlands-based installations specialists Tysoe Holdings. Together the companies employ more than 190 staff, with a combined turnover of around £59m.

Last year the group announced a major sustainability drive to take place throughout the constituent companies, following a holistic review of its sustainability performance.

Specific measures set to be implemented include: a greenhouse gas emissions benchmarking and reduction plan; a full supply chain audit and best practice review to bring it in line with sustainability policy; a roll out of social value activities to encourage the next generation of the construction industry; and a measurable waste reduction programme including a drive for the re-use of materials.

The Cold Chain Federation is the trade body that has represented the UK temperature-controlled storage and distribution industry for more than a century. The award to The P & M Group comes after many months of hard work at the company, initiated by Andy Moon and implemented by Joanne Moore.

“When you work so hard on something, sometimes you don’t realise what you have achieved until you put it all together,” she said.

“We’re really pleased we entered and honoured to be chosen as the winners of this award. It’s been such a team effort, everyone from the Chairman to the factory floor has been on board.”

Andy Moon said: “This is a marathon not a sprint and we recognise that we still have much work to do on our sustainability journey. However we have always tried to make excellence a watchword at The
P & M Group, setting an example for others to follow where we can.

“Alongside the many benefits that greater sustainability at our company can bring to our environment and engaged communities, we are keen to demonstrate to other construction subcontractors that there are business benefits to embracing a better way of doing things.”

The recognition is the latest episode in a momentous period for the company, which was originally founded in 1946 and has experienced major recent growth with turnover almost doubling in the past four years.

Shane Brennan, chief executive of the Cold Chain Federation, said: “Our industry is making great strides towards a sustainable future through innovation, collaboration and serious investment into improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions.

“The Cold Chain Federation is delighted to recognise and celebrate the businesses, facilities and individuals leading the way with the new Cold Chain Sustainability Awards.

“The standard of entries in all categories was exceptionally high and we congratulate The P & M Group for its important and industry-leading contribution towards tackling the challenges of climate change.”
