CLICK HERE TO LAUNCH THE JULY 1st DIGITAL EDITION OF WAREHOUSE & LOGISTICS NEWS MAGAZINE

Welcome to the July 1st edition of Warehouse & Logistics News. “And the winner is…” In this case, we’ll have the answers for you very soon. Warehouse & Logistics News is the official media partner to the 2016 UKWA Awards, taking place on Wednesday July 6th at the Dorchester Hotel in London, presented by Nick Hewer, the former PR guru and advisor to Lord Alan Sugar on The Apprentice.

Now in their seventeenth year, the UKWA Awards are one of the highlights of the industry calendar, rewarding excellence in the third party logistics sector and attracting entries from some of the most influential companies in logistics and materials handling. The Awards immediately follow the prestigious UKWA Annual Lunch, sponsored this year by Jungheinrich. You can find full details of the Awards and the finalists in our pull out supplement, presented with this issue.

The 2016 UKWA Awards categories include Customer Service, Training, Technical Innovation, Best New Warehouse Member of UKWA, Warehouse Manager of The Year, Warehouse Company of The Year and the Chairman’s Award for the individual or company that has made a real and lasting contribution to the industry. Encouraging young talent, there are also awards for the Junior Manager of The Year and Young Employee of The Year. We’ll be publishing the results on-line and in print after the show.

Speaking of winners, there are no barriers to success for protective barrier specialists The Rack Group, whose global achievement in changing the face of pallet racking protection in the last 12 years is highlighted on our front cover. The Rack Group’s market leading Rack Armour product, made of HDPE plastic with a shock-absorbing foam interior, now sells in over 80 countries and is manufactured on three continents, with major companies like Wal-Mart, Tesco, BMW, Office Depot, Mercedes, IKEA and Kellogg’s all using it.

Even if you don’t go in for awards, you can still raise your game by reading our features on Order Picking, Warehouse Lighting and Packaging. As our Order Picking feature (page 9-11) confirms, the disruptive power of the Internet means smaller manufacturers and suppliers can compete effectively for on-line business with bigger retailers and achieve same-day or next-day delivery by putting effective order picking systems centre stage.

Warehouse Lighting (page 12-14) is another area seeing a “seismic shift,” in the words of our feature introduction. Thanks to recent advances in LED systems this technology offers lower energy costs, reduced maintenance and better light quality, and hence improved safety and better working conditions. Lastly, as our Packaging feature (page 18-19) states, the biggest dividends here are coming from businesses taking a holistic approach with different parts of the supply chain collaborating to save on production, disposal, materials handling and transport costs and enhance their green credentials.

We wish the best of luck to all the finalists in the UKWA Awards, and look forward to seeing you at the Dorchester.
