Established in 1951, The Original Tour was the first of its kind and in 2001 became the largest in the world. The multi-award winning tour provides visitors to London with a relaxed and highly enjoyable view of the capital’s famous landmarks from open-topped buses which operate throughout the year.

The company selected Oxford-based, energy management specialist Enistic to handle the company’s ESOS process and is using the Enistic Easy ESOS scheme as the route to guaranteed compliance.

Enistic will be handling the measurement of energy use, including for transport operations, as well as data processing, reporting and sign-off before submission to the Environment Agency.

Paul Perry, Head of Safety & Engineering at The Original Tour said: “Although we are not a small company, we do not have spare staff to assign solely to ESOS compliance, all the people working on this have a ‘day job’. With this in mind we looked for a way that required minimal input from us but still guaranteed compliance. This is exactly the solution Enistic offered us.”

Darryl Mattocks, Managing Director of Enistic said: “We are delighted to be working with The Original Tour on ESOS. We are supplying the Lead Assessor, which is essential for reporting and compliance, and will be using Plato, our energy management software to measure, monitor and manage energy use. We will also be investigating all the latest transport technology solutions for energy savings potentials for this large fleet of buses.”

The Original Tour (part of RATP Dev, an independent part of the RATP group the fifth largest urban transport operator in the world) is already committed to a cleaner environment. The company has a fleet of nearly 100 buses, depots in Wandsworth and Rainham, a Visitors Centre in Trafalgar Square; offices in Grosvenor Gardens and Upminster, as well as sales kiosks and a box office.

All older buses in the fleet have been re-powered with modern Euro standard engines and fitted them with exhausts after treatment systems to ensure that emissions are in line with those of new vehicles. The replacement programme also ensures that the company operates one of the most environmentally friendly bus fleets in London.

In addition, The Original Tour has already installed a rainwater harvesting tank for washing the buses, changed lighting throughout the offices and main garage to low energy, and installed motion sensors on the lighting to reduce energy use.

Paul Perry commented: “Our aim is for Enistic to help us achieve our commitment to continued development and improved environmental performance. Any success on reducing the environmental impact from our vehicles will aid us in compliance with the new Ultra Low Emission Zone being introduced in 2020.”
