In this issue we have features to help you, on Warehouse Flooring, Lifting Gears and Cranes and Doors & Curtains. ‘Warehouse Flooring’ includes floor preparation, maintenance, mezzanines and area markings. ‘Lifting Gears and Cranes’ covers scissor lifts, heavy duty cranes and working platforms. And ‘Doors & Curtains’ takes in industrial doors, curtains and roller shutters.

Business people often grumble about Health & Safety and red tape, but safety in the warehouse should be in the front of every warehouse manager’s mind. SEMA, the Storage Equipment Manufacturers’Association is running a Three Steps to Safety campaign, based on safe storage following a three-step process – safe design, safe installation and safe maintenance. On our front cover SEMA President Matt Grierson outlines how to choose the right supplier at Step 2, the installation stage. In SEMA’s words, finding a racking design and installation company that places health and safety at the heart of their business needn’t be a lottery. SEMA has three relevant membership groups where products and services are quality assured; SEMA distributor companies, SEMA approved installation companies and an installers’ registration scheme, SEIRS.

SEMA have published a quality assurance installation checklist for you to ask possible suppliers before signing on the dotted line. As detailed in our article, the checklist is a surefire way of checking a storage firm’s health and safety credentials, and their use of trained labour and correct storage design. There are seven searching questions to help you cut to the chase.

Whatever else you do at the polls on May 7, vote Warehouse & Logistics News, the only publication to bring you the latest news from the industry every fortnight in print, digital and online. You can always trust us to deliver on our promises.

Meanwhile, before the election there’s the Early May Bank Holiday for the whole of the UK to enjoy. It’s been a source of controversy over the years: the Government at the time didn’t like it because it reminded them of the Soviets’ May Day parades in Red Square. Now it’s simply another Bank Holiday, and very welcome. Have a good break.
