Welcome to the 1st May issue of Warehouse & Logistics News. Hot on the heels of the Easter break, here we are, about to have the Early May Bank Holiday. As QI fans will know, the May Day tradition didn’t start with the Soviets and parades in Red Square, it’s rooted in our pre-Christian culture, with maypole dancing and all that. Of course now millions of us prefer to spend the holiday in that twenty first century form of worship, shopping.

FrontWhich brings us back to warehousing and logistics. Rain or shine, holiday or work day, the warehouse and logistics sector carries on keeping the supply chains moving for retailing and industry as a whole. In this issue we’ve another crop of news stories from the equipment and services suppliers, to help you keep informed and make decisions about purchases for your operation.

In our scheduled features, ‘Warehouse Flooring’ includes floor preparation, maintenance, mezzanines and area markings. ‘Lifting Gears and Cranes’ takes in scissor lifts, heavy duty cranes and working platforms. And ‘Doors & Curtains’ includes industrial doors, curtains and roller shutters.

Those trusty workhorses of our industry, forklift trucks are already extremely sophisticated, but the innovation continues apace. As reported on our front cover, Linde, one of the world’s leading forklift truck manufacturers, has launched a new generation of electric forklift trucks, the E12 to E20 EVO series, which will stand out in any warehouse’s truck fleet with their black “shark fin” on a red truck chassis and distinctive EVO lettering. Equally impressive are the new features Linde has added to its electric three wheel and four-wheel forklift trucks in the 1.2 to 2-tonne load category and introduced to its existing models to meet clients’ changing requirements, such as increased outdoor use. New driving dynamics programmes allow truck settings to be tailored between high performance and low energy consumption according to individual customer needs. The new power module with improved tuning reduces energy consumption by up to 16 percent compared to the previous series.

Linde’s new EVO series trucks also provide greater operator comfort and increase productivity. Active ventilation is standard and the high frequency on-board charger allows flexible recharging, simplifying battery charging by removing the need for the operator to open the battery hood, cab door or truck windows. The new “real-time indicator” allows optimum use of the truck’s energy reserves, precisely recording energy consumption and showing remaining battery time to the minute on the display. And the automatic parking brake comes on when the truck is at a standstill to ensure it is secure whenever the operator leaves it and prevent uncontrolled rollback on ramps.

Have a good month.
