Front_June_1stWith the embarrassingly low votes the UK gets every year from much of greater Europe in the Eurovision Song Contest, you’d think we were totally isolated and unpopular. Yet as Nigel Farage will remind you, the free movement of labour within the EU means growing numbers of Europeans are able to come and work here, including in warehousing and logistics. So perhaps they could tell everyone back home how great Britain is, and to vote for our songs?

Compared with the increased freedom of European workers, pallets are now subject to tighter restrictions than before. In recent months, the new EU Timber Regulations, with their legal obligations and penalties for timber pallet users, have been making plastic pallets an increasingly attractive alternative for moving goods within Europe.

As featured on our front cover Goplasticpallets.com has secured UK exclusivity on the full range of CABKA pallets following the merger of German manufacturer CABKA with Belgian based IPS. The move strengthens Goplasticpallets’ position as the UK’s leading independent supplier of plastic pallets that are proven in the European and global logistics industry.

Over the next few months Goplasticpallets.com will introduce the 31 pallets in its new CABKA-IPS pallet range to the UK. CABKA and IPS are specialist niche suppliers; CABKA’s emphasis is on economically priced one-trip pallets for export; IPS focus on heavy duty, multi-trip pallets. IPS was the first to introduce specialist hygienic pallets to the market and has been a key player in the logistics industry since then. The CABKA-IPS pallets can be loaded directly into white production areas for shipping overseas, as they are resistant to insects, dust and bacterial contaminants and exempt from ISPM15 regulations. Made from recycled materials, they offer end users instant ‘green’ credentials as they can be reground to produce other lower grade plastic products.

The August 2012 Eurostat figures reveal 41% of goods moments by road in the EU-27 countries – equating to 639 billion tonne-kilometres annually – were palletised. The great majority of pallets in every day use here and in Europe are still timber, but in recent years plastic pallets have been making inroads for moving goods in clean or sterile environments and reducing consignment weights in airfreight. It will be interesting to see how plastic pallet usage in Europe develops from here, in response to the combination of the new regulations and compelling product offerings from our leading suppliers.

Have a good month.
