Welcome to the 15 April Warehouse & Logistics News. As we went to press temperatures were expected to return to normal in the next few days, bringing an end to the enduring chill of the last three months and more. So here’s to spring coming by the time you’re reading this!

April_15_frontFrosty conditions are meat and drink to Aisle-Master’s new articulated forklift trucks designed for use in cold stores, which are in the news in this issue after winning the Innovation category at this year’s UK FLTA Awards for Excellence.

Aisle-Master lifting the trophy is the icing on the cake for brand owner Combilift, the Irish-based specialist manufacturer of both the award-winning trucks and the Combilift 4-way forklift range, who are celebrating 15 years in business as featured on our front cover.

Combilift is a classic case of spotting a customer need and developing a solution. Before Martin McVicar and Robert Moffet launched the Combilift, the world’s first IC engine powered, wheel drive multidirectional forklift, anyone storing and handling long loads had to rely on a combination of other types of forklifts, none of them designed for their specific needs. Since 1998 Combilift has achieved global success, adding materials handling equipment to Ireland’s long list of exports, including champion racehorses, a world dominating rock band and a certain brand of stout.

Also in this issue we have scheduled features on Power Sources and Order Picking, two vital elements of warehousing and logistics operations. ‘Power Sauces’ covers all aspects of motive power in the warehouse and logistics environment, including batteries, LPG and engines: ‘Order Picking’ takes in pickers, pick to light and voice picking.

You can’t say warehousing and logistics isn’t glamorous. Having wowed the nation on Dragon’s Den, Pall-Ex Chairman and Chief Executive Hilary Devey now has a new Channel 4 show, The Intern, with 18-24 year old hopefuls being set a series of challenges in their quest to get a job. It’s compelling viewing, though by all accounts in the first programme Hilary wasn’t anywhere near as scary as Lord Sugar in The Apprentice. Stay tuned…

And finally, speaking of celebrities in our industry, in a parallel universe Matt Cowell, Marketing Manager of CHEP UK & Ireland, would be a superstar like his near namesake Simon. As Matt reveals in Quote Unquote, he is a multi-instrumentalist and has played in professional bands since he was 15. He says he hasn’t completely given up on becoming a rock star yet. Meanwhile Matt spends his working days identifying new ways to support Chep’s customers’ objectives, helping them find supply chain efficiencies and looking for innovative ways to deliver customer value. Rock on, Matt!
