Paperchase are a High Street retailer supplying stationery goods and much much more. Their Distribution Centre is in Thrapston, Northamptonshire and they have over 100 stores in the UK. In their huge central warehouse the suppliers and picking teams generate a substantial quantity of cardboard and plastic film from all the goods that are delivered in.

As the cardboard is generated, it is put into cages which are taken to the baler zone. Up to now, one labourer has had the full time task of feeding a vertical baler with the contents of the cages. This equated to a couple of tons a day. With an increased amount of back loading from the stores it was decided to streamline this operation by installing a Landfill Alternatives horizontal baler. The effect has been immediate with supervisors claiming to save one mans labour as everyone throws their own card in as they generate it.

With a large shaped hopper, the biggest boxes are immediately processed with no folding or cutting and the bales are a constant 450kg mill acceptable bale. These are easy to stack on top of each other. The Intake Shift Supervisor commented “The process of baling our recyclables is now so quick and easy. With the Christmas rush now upon us the constant build up of full cages of cardboard is history. It makes everyone’s life so much easier”.

An increase in back loading will divert all the recyclables from the waste bins at each store saving costs and tonnage to landfill.

“We have invested a considerable amount of time looking for a solution to our recycling requirements. Working with Landfill Alternatives and the installation on the new horizontal baler has provided us with a great solution to our previously very labour intensive process. This will play an important role in improving not only the DC’s but the company’s green credentials whilst making our processes cleaner, safer and easy to use for our people. Everybody is very happy with the new machine” says Nigel Parker the Paperchase Warehouse Manager.
