Sandpiper Corporation Ltd has announced that it has won a key contract to supply Chris Hayter (Transport) Ltd (CHT) with a mobile computing solution for its new customer web portal “Hubs System” to increase product traceability throughout its three main sites, maximise efficiency and improve customer service.

Chris Hayter (Transport) Ltd specialises in transport, logistics, and storage & distribution solutions. Established in 1964, the company remains privately owned and prides itself on providing first class bespoke solutions that reduce costs, improve control and speed the movement of products to the end user to any location and at a time of their choosing no matter what the size or quantities. CHT does not use any third parties for any part of its services as outstanding customer care and performance is paramount.

CHT apply up to date information technology to all areas of its business to ensure customers maximise cost and time savings. The latest development is a web portal booking system which allows its customers to log into CHT’s website and place orders. The customer can also print a barcode label ready to be attached to any new goods to be collected.

The new system allows the customers to log into their account and see at any time of day where their orders are and what, if any problems have occurred in deliveries or stock picking. Periodic audit checks can also be performed.

During the development of the solution, Sandpiper was asked to recommend a solution that could display data and scan barcodes whilst in a seated position on fork trucks and have the capabilities of running the new bespoke software. Size, weight and form factor were important criteria, so Sandpiper recommend the DLoG XMT5/7 rugged vehicle mount computer. It is robust, compact, and still packed with the latest technology. It’s an ideal vehicle mount terminal where space on the truck is limited.

Once the orders have been placed by the customer via the web portal, the data is sent to the host server where the new software optimises the orders and allocates deliveries, picking and collections to the DLoG units. This information is then collated and sent to the TomTom devices in the Lorries in specific sequences to optimise routes and maximise driver and vehicles efficiency which in turn reduces transportation costs for the customer.

A key component of the solution is the wireless infrastructure. As one of CHT’s customers share some warehouse space and already use wireless data communications, a pre-requisite was to ensure that the customers operation was not impacted. Sandpiper recommended and installed an 802.11a wireless infrastructure operating at 5GHz, as well as integrating an 802.11a wireless adapter into the DLoG mobile computers.

The new system has numerous benefits including time/cost savings, integrity of stock, stock visibility, reduction in phone calls for booking orders, accuracy of data, improved stock location, improved loading sequence, efficient delivery route planning.

Mike Wise, Interim Project Manager stated “I have been working with Sandpiper for a number of years on various projects and the service and support they supply is superb. I would recommend them time and time again and look forward to working with them on my next project”.
