It’s going to be tough, all right, but the warehouse and logistics business won’t take it lying down. We’re made of stronger stuff. We’ve got through the last couple of years, and carried on with the snow and ice in January. We’ll keep going in the Coalition Cuts era, with fixed smiles and gritted teeth.

In this issue of WLN we’ve three fact-filled features to help you – Pallet Management, Packaging and Warehouse Management Systems, and an exclusive interview with George Utz, the returnable handling solutions experts, whose bestselling products include containers and inserts, pallets, dollies and pallet boxes.

Our Pallet Management feature is a review of the major national and regional pallet service providers; Packaging embraces transit packaging, stretch wrappers and other protection; and Warehouse Management Systems includes some of the latest WMS applications.

We’ve also got Episode 48 of our exclusive History of The Fork Lift Truck, by James Brindley, Director of the National Fork Truck Heritage Centre (worth a visit by the way if you’re in Derbyshire on a Sunday: call first to check.) The History is now up to 1965.

The headlines as we went to press were gloomy once again. Breathe deeply and concentrate on lowering your pulse rate as you ponder a widening UK trade deficit, credit rating agencies warning that the UK faces a tough challenge to cut budget deficits and oil price warnings after the Gulf of Mexico business.

There is a lighter side to it all. We understand, for instance, the politicians are going to involve the public in decisions about making cuts. Whoopee! Will we be phone voting about public policy initiatives in some nightmare Saturday night TV show, a cross between the Dorothys, Total Wipeout and the leaders’ debates? It could change News Night forever.

Calm down dear, it’s only a commercial. In our interview Carsten Diekmann, General Manager of George Utz UK, remains cool. He says George Utz’s sales continue to grow despite our current tough conditions and its Alfreton production site has been working 24/7 for over 18 months. Investment for future growth includes new in-mould labelling technology and four new raw material silos. As Carsten says, people continue to eat and drink and buy things for their homes – all of which still need to be delivered to the consumers.

Happy reading!
