A specially designed conveyor system and a free-standing goods lift installed by European Conveyor Systems (ECS) are providing rapid handling of goods while minimising space usage in a new warehouse opened by Davies Turner at Bristol. ECS has already completed conveyor installations for Davies Turner at Dartford and Birmingham.
The new warehouse, which has tripled the space available at the company’s existing multi-modal South-West Hub, has four mezzanine floors with a total area of 8000m2 and high-bay narrow-aisle racking capable of storing more than 10,000 pallets. There are loading bays on two sides of the building.
The ECS equipment has been installed to provide a flexible link between the loading bays and the mezzanine floors to minimise the time needed to load and unload cases on and off trailers. At the same time the equipment had to take up as little space as possible in order to leave maximum floor area for sorting and checking orders.
The solution devised by ECS consists of a series of fixed powered belt conveyors between the ground floor and the mezzanines, with a flexible powered conveyor that connects these to the loading docks, so goods can be sent directly between any of the upper floors and any of the loading bays. The flexible conveyor has been supplied in sections that can be linked together as needed, depending on the location of the loading bay being used. All the conveyors are 650mm wide to accommodate a wide range of boxes, and the system can handle up to 1000 cartons an hour.
A control system enables operators to specify which of the four mezzanine floors in-coming cases are delivered to. Alternatively, a bar-code reader, weigh-checker and dimension-scanner installed in-line with the flexible conveyor enables Davies Turner to provide automatic routing and storage allocation in the warehouse.
A 2000kg-capacity Gebhardt goods lift has been installed to carry palletised goods between the five levels in the warehouse, the highest being at 14.5 metres. A special head shaft was fitted to allow for the small head-room. The lift is 2400mm wide x 1660mm deep x 2100mm high and travels at 0.27metres/sec.
