Anita Emerson, Warehouse Operations Manager at hauliers Knights of Old took home the coveted Woman of the Year award, presented to a woman in the industry whose vision, dedication and success, make her an outstanding role model for other women embarking upon careers in transport and logistics.

Anita began her career working as an Account Administrator, and after much hard work and determination, she approached her Managing Director for a chance to prove herself. From that day on Anita the ‘Warehouse Operations Manager’ and Knights of Old have not looked back. With Anita’s strong work ethic and relentless drive she managed to streamline procedures, helping to raise standards and more importantly the service levels. Anita is a key part of the management team who helped Knights of Old win the 2006 Motor Transport Haulier of the Year award. She has devoted herself to her warehousing clients, winning the respect of her colleagues, which is no mean feat due to the long hours the job demands and having to balance the needs of staff with the needs of the business.

These inaugural awards, in association with Skills for Logistics, aim to highlight the contributions that women are making to this field and to encourage more women to pursue a career within the sector.
Many women feel discouraged from pursuing careers in the industry, often under a misconception that there are few opportunities available to them and yet these winners are proof that the transport and logistics sector is a place where women with drive and ambition can thrive.

Maxine Benson, Co-founder and Director of everywoman comments, “The gender boundaries in terms of career are gradually being broken down and these winners are demonstrating that transport and logistics is a sector where women can prosper and succeed. It is fantastic to be able to reward these women for achieving so much in a sector where they are in the minority and we only hope their success will be an inspiration to others wanting to pursue a rewarding career in transport and logistics.

Des Evans, CEO of sponsor MAN Truck & Bus UK comments, “The achievements of today’s winners cannot be underestimated. They have set the very highest standards in their own roles and are an example for anyone thinking of entering the transport and logistics industry. Within our own MAN team we have seen for some time the many benefits women bring into the business, and to be able to support this initiative is both a pleasure and a privilege.

Lucinda Ward, Marketing and Research Director at Skills for Logistics comments, “These awards have provided a much needed boost to the image of the logistics industry. These inspirational women are great role models and their stories should encourage many more people (not only women) to consider a career in our exciting sector.
