Cold chain storage and distribution have never been more demanding on the operator. Clients expect technology-enhanced delivery that’s faster than ever while favouring better waste reduction and energy efficiency, writes Jason Webb, Managing Director at Electronic Temperature Instruments (ETI). Every warehouse, vehicle and handover point added to a distribution network increases the opportunities for product mishandling. Add a climate that readily fluctuates between heat spikes and heavy rainfall to the mix, and you’re left with a highly complex and unpredictable environment to manage.

Poor temperature monitoring practices are causing many logistics managers to fall behind in this environment. Relying on baseline techniques leaves them with an image of stock conditions that erodes product quality and potentially consumer safety. By moving towards ongoing, accurate and well-calibrated monitoring, they can bring everyday practice in line with what clients, regulators and consumers rightly expect.

Taking temperature readings at infrequent intervals is where the problems typically begin. At any moment between routine spot checks, delays may occur during unloading or a temporary power outage might take place.

Many of the same operators simply ‘set and forget’ their temperature sensors, overlooking the calibration drift that equipment naturally experiences over time.

Others make things worse by placing sensors away from the most temperature-sensitive spots in the warehouse.

These mistakes could compromise the product’s shelf life before it’s reached the retailer. Failing to meet compliance standards could then create legal, financial and long-term reputational damage.

Getting ahead of these risks starts with ongoing and connected monitoring. Wi-Fi loggers and Bluetooth thermometers can be used to provide real-time visibility, connecting with smart monitoring software that displays and analyses long-term trends. Issues that once occurred in isolation soon reveal themselves as part of a pattern, making it much easier to identify their root causes.

But this technology is only as good as the equipment underpinning it. Loggers and sensors need to be calibrated frequently against known reference points and replaced when their accuracy drifts. Annual calibration should be the minimum requirement for most facilities.

Using probes that stimulate product temperature over ambient air temperature is equally important. Food temperature will typically change more gradually than air temperature would in the event of an unexpected loading delay or a door left open.

Operators also need thorough training to understand the intricacies behind temperature monitoring.

By implementing these solutions, warehouse and logistics teams can transform temperature monitoring from a burden into a strategic asset. Operators who pair accurate, ongoing monitoring with connected analytics and skilled interpretation across their sites give themselves the evidence base to protect product quality, demonstrate compliance and reduce uncertainty.
