In 2022, SEMA launched our updated SEIRS training programme. Even though it has been running for two years, we still get a lot of questions on the changes so we thought we would provide the answers you need on how important SEIRS is for the industry.

Why and how did you change SEIRS?

For over 25 years, SEIRS has been a national training initiative for installers of racking equipment. As the modern warehouse evolved, industry experts within SEMA felt the course wasn’t meeting requirements. We wanted the new course to increase the knowledge level and skills installers need to complete their job safely. The main changes have been splitting the course into two – Foundation and Diploma level – and crucially, it covers both a theoretical element and practical instruction on erecting and dismantling racking with an assessed element.

What does the Foundation level cover?

This one-day course is for anyone new to racking installations. Predominately classroom-based, it covers health and safety elements and theory behind installing racking. On completion, installers receive their Trainee card which is valid for six months. This period enables them to work with SEIRS-qualified installers to build on their learnt knowledge.

What does the Diploma level cover?

Trainee card holders complete their training by passing the diploma course. Before attending, the installer must pass a MEWPS certificate 3A/3B and also, if a SEIRS CSCS card is needed, a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. The two-day course covers theoretical and practical instruction on assembly of racking that includes frames from kit form. On day two, installers are assessed on a mechanical build and dismantle process.

Do I need a CSCS card for installing racking?

Racking projects can fall under the category of construction projects and site managers may require installers to hold a CSCS card. Racking installations are a specialised skill and SEIRS works with CSCS as one of their Partner Card Schemes. Installers can gain their CSCS card by undertaking the SEIRS card in the usual way if they have first passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test.

Value for money with SEIRS

Our SEIRS courses are about meeting SEMA’s high installation standards and safe practices. The courses, run by industry experts, span a total of three days for both the Foundation and Diploma levels. To provide additional value, we have also extended card validity from three to five years.
