Philip Whiteley – Docking Sales Manager, UK at ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems speaks to Warehouse & Logistics News.
What are your best-known products/solutions/services?
The ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems division is best known for its market leading loading bay equipment and comprehensive range of industrial doors. We continuously invest in our research and development department, meaning our new products offer the latest in technology, safety and reliability. Add to this we also have one of the largest repair and maintenance teams in the country. They offer a 24/7 service 365 days a year, meaning our customers don’t have to worry about their loading bays or doors being out of action for any longer than they need to be.
Which industry sectors are your customers in and which ones are growing fastest?
ASSA ABLOY operate across a diverse range of sectors, linking them all is the fact our engineers and products are trusted, safe and reliable, maximising uptime and ensuring the safety of operatives across sectors. Brexit and the pandemic saw a real surge in speculative warehousing and parcel delivery driven by the need for increased capacity in these markets. The period that followed saw a downturn in these sectors, but saw increased investment by end users as they looked to upgrade their existing sites with modernisation or extensions.
What are your most recent product innovations?
Our latest innovation is the new Dual Drive dock door. Our OH1142P is a leap forward in terms of loading bay technology, bringing a range of benefits designed to enhance loading bay efficiency and safety. This new springless design offers increased uptime and reduced life costs thanks to improved reliability and reduced wear and tear. This new dual drive system is 30% faster per opening and closing cycle and offers automatic electric locking as standard and, with a live connection to our Insight system, door status can be moitored remotely 24/7.
Can you tell us about any recent customer contracts and how you helped the customer meet their challenges?
A long standing customer was recently looking to upgrade and modernise their loading bays. As a manufacturer of dairy products, they had some specific requirements and requests. Key priorities were reducing energy loss and ensuring a smooth path for trolleys with small nylon wheels that become unsettled over bumps. Each bay had a new sectional door, cushion shelter and telescopic dock leveller. Our sectional doors offer market leading environmental performance and significantly reduce both condensation and energy loss. The cushion shelters improved the seal with trailers during loading and the telescopic dock levellers offered accommodation for a wider range of trailer bed heights. A bespoke leveller frame design also ensured a smooth transition from the warehouse to the trailer, minimising the risk of spilt loads.
How does business in 2023 compare to previous years? What’s your strategy for succeeding in the current climate?
2023 was a challenging year for the building industry, particularly after what had been a very strong 2022 as far as new build developments was concerned. I am hoping 2024 shows growth, and the early indicators are that it is as enquiries for new projects is up on the second half of 2023. Given the diversity of our customer base, we as a company, are fortunate as other parts of the business have showed strong performance even when the new build market has struggled. Our focus on customer satisfaction and first time fix repairs means that we have a loyal customer base and we are able to drive growth in market sectors less affected by the wider economic factors which led to the challenging climate in some markets during 2023.
