When one of the UK’s fastest-growing variety retailers, B&M Retail, got in touch with a shop floor storage problem, Exporta’s retail projects division sprang into action.

The brief was simple…. Come up with a safe, effective, and visually appealing Point of Sale solution for bulky, difficult-to-stack items (Cushions, Kitchen Rolls, Firewood etc.) to eliminate the risk of these types of items falling into the aisles and becoming an obstruction or trip hazard for customers.

Although this particular solution was far from groundbreaking, (pallet/retention systems have been around for decades), Exporta wanted to bring it up to date, add some extra layers of safety and give it a bit of zing.

With over 3 million shoppers per week, safety was high on the agenda. As we all know well, children tend to touch everything in shops, so making them child-friendly was an essential requirement in the design. Exporta wanted a clean, smooth, safe (and more aesthetically impressive) base unit so therefore started with the newly updated, best-selling and market leading plastic rackable, the LR1210P. Exporta chose to offer a no rim version, so the retention fit was snug and stable.

Part of the brief was that whatever base design we went with, it had to have the ability to accept and support B&M’s brand new and unique Point of Sale totem stand. LR1210P’s versatile deck design meant that again, it was a no brainer for this system with zero adjustments required.

The cage was a different story however, designed almost from scratch. Exporta ensured there were no exposed wire ends that you often see with other retention units. All exposed edges were double rimmed, and all other non-exposed edges were machined to a smooth and safe finish. This vastly improved safety and reduced the risk of product damage.

Exporta also remade the pallet attachment swing arms to give a secure fit, specific to the base unit.

The key considerations were the finish on the cage and the quality of the zinc coating.

Traditional retention units, typically bulk produced in lower quality steel, are well known to contain impurities. This then affects the welding and the bonding during the galvanising process. They invariably break easily, lose lustre extremely quickly and end up looking dull and grey.

Exporta’s high quality, European steel is treated and galvanised in house using our Bright Electro Galvanising process. The surface coatings were developed and tested to the highest standards by in-house chemists.

This results in an uber shiny, long-lasting finish, providing that wow factor. Another successful retail collaboration for team Exporta.
