We are the champions… ” Today, those words sometimes sound like the distant echo of a bygone era. But the industry of automatic identification and data capture technologies (AIDC) is giving us reason to hope again. It’s easy to see why AIM Germany sees AIDC as an enabling technology for automation and autonomous processes in production and logistics. The industry’s innovative edge is only underscored by the sheer diversity of solutions and new technologies on display at LogiMAT 2024—from traditional optical readable media (ORM) with barcode, QR code, 2D code, and 3D code to radio frequency identification (RFID), sensor technology, Bluetooth, real-time location systems (RTLS), vision systems, and near-field communication (NFC). And there is still a great need for innovative, state-of-the-art identification solutions to drive the digital revolution. The healthy trend in demand fuels ongoing optimism in the industry. AIM’s latest trend barometer reports that some 80 percent of surveyed companies feel that the trend in the AIDC market is relatively stable and expect business to at least hold steady or even improve going forward.

The AIDC industry is also unveiling other innovative solutions featuring breakthroughs in adjacent technologies. Industry professionals can already look forward to a variety of new products and innovations when LogiMAT 2024 opens its doors at the Messe Stuttgart convention centre in just a few weeks. The first thing current and future customers will notice is an even tighter concentration of AIDC industry exhibitors and presentations. Hall 2 will once again serve as the main hub for AIDC professionals. This centralisation worked very well last year, so the event management is doubling down this year with the support of AIM Germany and its Managing Director Peter Altes. Nearly all the approximately 80 providers of identification, RFID, and sensor technology—some of whom often had to be placed in other exhibit halls in recent years—will all be located together in Hall 2 at LogiMAT 2024, along with their latest products and solutions. The idea behind this more concentrated exhibit hall layout is to provide a fixed home for the AIDC industry in Hall 2 so that exhibitors can present this key segment more effectively and visitors can experience the full spectrum of current products and trends in a more contained space. A consortium of AIM member businesses and partners will also run the Tracking & Tracing Theatre in Hall 2 (Booth 2B07), focusing on the digital supply chain in a variety of live scenarios.

The informative accompanying program of LogiMAT 2024 will also reflect the latest trends and forward-looking solutions in the AIDC industry. In addition to numerous Exhibitor Insights, in which exhibitors present their products and solutions, two Expert Forums in the LogiMAT Arena, East Entrance Atrium, are also devoted specifically to AIDC topics. Dr. Ronald Müller, Member of the Board of Directors of EMVA (European Machine Vision Association) and CEO of Vision Markets, moderates a discussion of current trends in machine vision and AI-supported identification in “Machine vision – key to next-gen logistics” on March 19. Immediately following the forum, attendees will have the opportunity to talk with EMVA members about the solutions presented during the forum at the association’s booth in Hall 2. On the final day of LogiMAT, Ident Editor-in-Chief Thorsten Aha and AIM Germany’s Director Peter Altes moderate a forum entitled “AIDC as an enabling technology for automating and optimising materials handling, supply chain management, and logistics.”

LogiMAT 2024 once again offers visitors and exhibitors from across Europe and around the world a unique platform to directly compare the latest products and innovations and benefit from a wealth of informative presentations. Exhibitors have already announced several new innovations never before displayed anywhere in the world, including a scan-free AIDC solution. And we’ve already identified another emerging industry theme: cybersecurity. I feel strongly that the AIDC industry, with its “hidden champions” and diverse portfolio of products and solutions, will shine at LogiMAT 2024 as a champion for automation and digital transformation.
