Hörmann UK have over 80 years’ experience in the manufacture of industrial doors and loading technology, being a key supplier to all the major developers across the UK.

Providing a complete service from initial consultation through to design, installation, and long-term maintenance support, Hörmann provide an all-encompassing support package which is second to none. Phil Thorpe, Industrial Division Manager at Hörmann UK speaks to Warehouse & Logistics News.

What are your best-known products and services?

Hörmann UK supply a comprehensive range of quality products mainly for the warehouse and logistics markets, specialising in loading bay systems, level access doors, high speed doors, fire sliding doors and steel door sets.

With a large team of experienced professionals, we offer the very highest levels of service from initial discussions right through to the handover of a completed project – the Hörmann Difference.

Which industry sectors are your customers in, and which ones are growing fastest?

The majority of the work we undertake is for major site developers such as GLP, Prologis, St. Modwen and Panattoni, whose end users operate in the logistics and distribution sector.

We continue to see strong demand for warehousing and distribution facilities, albeit with a shift from very large sheds to multiple, smaller units per site. Demand is also increasing for more specialist installations such as environmental treatment plants, car showrooms and major food retail facilities.

What are your most recent product innovations?

The BAU exhibition held this April was a showcase for all the new products from the Hörmann Group. Of particular note was the launch of a moveable central support for our industrial sectional doors. This enables three sectional doors to be connected, with the moveable support being able to be quickly and easily pushed to the side to provide clear access across the entire opening.

We have also introduced a range of double action doors particularly suited to the food production and distribution markets. Manufactured from polyethylene (PE500) or stainless steel, the doors are ideal for use in busy, high impact environments whilst meeting stringent hygiene standards.

Can you tell us about any recent customer contracts?

We have recently completed an installation for St. Modwen for phase one of their development at Derby Park. A total of 27 complete loading bays have been installed featuring dock levellers, scissor arm dock shelters, high performance sectional doors and a variety of loading safety features such as traffic lights and dock buffers.

Hörmann steel fire escape doorsets have also being installed completing an impressive range of products supplied.

How does business so far in 2023 compare with previous years? What’s your strategy for succeeding in the current climate?

After the unprecedented circumstances surrounding 2021/22 and the resulting huge growth in demand, this year is back to what we would call ‘normal’, but positive. Sales continue to grow, and we look forward with confidence to a healthy order book for 2024 and beyond.

Our strategy is simple, continue doing what we are well known for – quality products and high levels of service.

What is the latest news from your company?

One of the most important developments this year has been the amalgamation of the Hörmann and Fen-Bay service teams and the creation of FBS-Hörmann. The company is now able to offer the industrial market access to the largest and most experienced service and maintenance teams, with over 120 engineers supplying a nationwide, 24/7, 365 day a year service offering, with a callout time of just 4 hours.

Can you tell us about any areas where you’re currently making technical advances, e.g. sustainability, environment?

As a family business, we take social responsibility very seriously, with a clear focus on sustainability and the environment and how it affects all aspects of our daily lives. For example, our UK headquarters in Coalville is powered via solar panels and simple things like supplying electric and hybrid company vehicles all go towards doing our bit for future generations.

As a Group, we maximise our use of renewable energy and offset over 100,000 tonnes of CO2 by promoting wind energy and reforestation projects in co-operation with Climate Partner. All our products are produced with confirmation of sustainability through our Environmental Product Declaration.
