Head of Strategy

Jarrod Van Der Westhuizen, Head of Strategy at Nene Group speaks to Warehouse & Logistics News.

What are your best-known products/solutions/services?

Our specialist area is providing full turn-key solutions to companies, helping to decrease their carbon footprints and aid the journey towards sustainability at both organisational and site level. We work on new sites at the construction phase as well as retrofitting our solutions to existing sites.

These solutions often include a full array of our services including but not limited to; Daylight Harvesting lighting and Emergency lighting, Solar and Battery Energy Storage solutions, Grid balancing software, Decarbonised Heat Pumps and Ground/Air source Heat Pumps.

Which industry sectors are your customers in and which ones are growing fastest?

Our customers are not defined by one industry or sector. We work with a mixture of clients such as large-scale commercial landlords, Retail clients, Production facilities, Logistics/3PL clients and principal contractors. Within Nene Electrical we are seeing huge growth in projects for large-scale commercial landlords and principal contractors, specifically sustainable projects, but also Logistics and retail clients. With both ESG and EPC ratings at the forefront of our clients mind’s, we work with them on developing custom solutions to help meet their required targets irrespective of their site size and age.

We are also experiencing an increase in the adoption of daylight harvesting lighting technology within 24-hour operational facilities to keep a consistent level of lumens within a site at all times, utilising the free lumens from skylights to lower energy costs.

What are the major trends and developments affecting your category and your customers, and how are you responding?

Bluntly, Energy Prices! Increasing energy costs have affected our Customers drastically over the past 1-2 years, especially the customers who operate multiple 24hr production and/or operational facilities. With the cost of grid electricity being so high, we have seen a drastic shift in customer’s views regarding the transition to partial or full off-grid energy consumption. Our customers are beginning to realise that they could be generating all of the power they need, and more, from the roof of their buildings whilst storing excess electricity in Battery Energy Storage Solutions (BESS) for their own electricity consumption throughout the night. Due to this, we are constantly investing in growing our team of experts and exploring more sustainable partnerships so that we can offer an unparalleled service to our customers.

What are your plans to grow the business this year?

This year we have a specific focus to leverage and strengthen our existing relationships with customers. Strong business partnerships are a key component to our business and we look to build long-lasting and trustworthy relationships with both new and existing customers. To us, business growth is derived from trust, competence and focussing on the future.

This is why we are playing our part in building a greener future through our sustainable offerings. A large focus area for us this year is to aid our customers on their journey to becoming net-zero and carbon neutral organisations.

What sets your company apart from the competition?

At Nene Electrical we pride ourself on our professionalism and service, supplying any and all requirements of our customers in a timely and efficient manner. However, what sets us apart from our competition is our family-feel. In December 2023 the parent company of Nene Electrical – Nene Group – will be celebrating our 50th year in business. Nene Group is still family owned and we carry that philosophy across all of our subsidiaries.

In 1973 the Nene Brand was born as Nene Electrical which had great success, building the foundation of what we provide today, and we are proud to have carried the brand forward into the modern day.

Are you investing in Staff training and Skills development?

We Invest heavily in our Staff training and Skills development. Our Head of Compliance, Sharon O’Connor, is constantly looking to update our training methods and adhere to any changes in legislation to ensure that staff are as proficient as possible, whether on-site or office based. If members of our staff are looking to involve themselves in specialised training outside of what we offer as standard, we are always looking to support them.
