Simon Howell, Managing Director of Herts Mechanical Handling Services, tells Warehouse & Logistics News what makes the company stand out from their competitors.

What services does Herts Mechanical offer?

At the core of our business, we install, maintain, repair and decommission materials handling equipment

However, we can offer an awful lot of other services as well, due to our depth of experience and versatility.

For example; over the 33 years we have been established, we have been asked to decommission complete production sites, ship machinery around the world, refurbish pallet and tote cranes, lift processing equipment through the roof of a 5 storey building, work on the new Tottenham Hotspur ground, move mezzanine floors, overhaul pumps and mining equipment, welding, fabrication and motor replacement.

We have even reclad an industrial dough mixing machine!

What clients do you work with? What industries do they operate in?

For MHE installation, as you would imagine, our customers are materials handling system integrators – many of which will be known through Warehouse News.

However, we also have some direct end users where we supply resident engineers and a number of others to whom we offer our diverse range of services.

The industries we cover are extremely varied and range from industrial chemical processing, e-commerce, warehousing, construction products, clothing, manufacturing, engineering, frozen food to name just a few.

In short, anywhere where MHE is utilised or where our diverse services are required.

What regions of the world are your clients based in?

Principally, we operate in the UK, ROI and mainland Europe, however, we have also worked in the UAE, Canada, United States and Russia.

Our clients can be based anywhere in the world and this is no issue to us.

How many engineers work for Herts Mechanical?

Currently we have 25 engineers and have plans to grow that number.

We employ our own engineers rather than using sub-contractors. We believe this makes us quite unique in the industry.

What kinds of other equipment are Herts Mechanical’s engineers able to repair and service?

As I mentioned above, we are predominantly MHE installation engineers but our skills and experiences lead us down many different engineering avenues.

What training do you provide to staff?

Anything they may need to be able to complete the job safely and properly.

As a fundamental, every engineer has a CSCS, Fork Truck and Scissor Lift licenses, as well as all the site ‘standards’ such as; Working at Height, Asbestos Awareness, Manual Handling, PPE, Slips, Trips & Falls, HAVS, Risk Assessment.

All our Supervisors will hold SSSTS by the end of this year.

We also hold additional licenses for more specialist equipment, such as Cranes and Telehandlers.

All our engineers are First Aid trained and carry a comprehensive First Aid kit on every job.

If we need any specific training for a job, we will invest in that.

In short, I would like to think we give them everything they need to be able to do the job professionally and competently.

What is the company’s commitment to social responsibility?

We appreciate our environmental responsibilities and this is why we have recently applied and subsequently received accreditation for ISO14001. This requires us to continually examine and improve our environmental impact.

We are a diverse employer and as mentioned above we invest in our staff.

How future proof is your business?

The fact we have been around for over 30 years would hopefully indicate that we have a future ahead of us, although the future won’t take care of itself and we must be continually improving.

Herts Mechanical has always fostered long terms relationships with its customers and this has no doubt aided our longevity. We consider relationships are core to us and this is something we wish to develop further.

We are actively looking at succession planning at all levels within the business to improve the business structure and efficiency.

We have invested in a new IT system which has streamlined our processes and made us more efficient.

This will also support our growth plans for the business without the need for additional investment.

What are the key strengths of the business?

We have a very experienced and knowledgeable workforce and significant technical expertise.

We employ our own engineers.

We forge long term relationships.

We are open to new ideas.

We are honest, reliable and trustworthy.

We want our customers to choose Herts Mechanical because we are open, honest and good at what we do.
