Lucas Systems helps companies transform their distribution center by dramatically increasing worker productivity, operational agility, and customer and worker satisfaction using voice and AI optimisation technologies. Simon Dunlop, Solutions Architect and Project Delivery Manager, EMEA at Lucas Systems speaks to Warehouse & Logistics News.

What are your best-known products/solutions/services?

Lucas specialises in smart software for warehouse managers and on-floor workers powered through our unique AI, Jennifer, the brains, orchestration engine and voice of the solution. Drawing on over 25 years of extensive experience in process optimisation and employing AI-based optimisation technologies, Lucas empowers companies to revamp their distribution centre (DC) operations and respond to changes while enhancing precision, productivity, throughput, and customer service. The optimisation of human resources, robots, inventory, and other resources within the warehouse is the cornerstone of Lucas’s approach.

Which industry sectors are your customers in and which ones are growing fastest?

Since 1998 we’ve partnered with hundreds of companies from Fortune 50’s to single site distributors, to help them transform DC operations and adapt to change. Our customers include industry leaders in the beverage, foodservice, healthcare, industrial, retail and e-commerce.

What are your most recent product innovations?

Utilising an exclusive AI-based process called Dynamic Work Optimisation, Lucas has helped customers reduce travel 30-50% by optimising assignments of work and by defining optimal pick sequences or pick paths.

Dynamic Work Optimisation has allowed customers to more than double picking productivity and cut labour hours in half without making any changes to their warehouse layout or adding expensive automation or robotics.

What are the major trends and developments affecting your category and your customers, and how are you responding?

The shortage of workers, especially in the warehouse and distribution sectors, is driving product development that helps reduce training and labour needs. With the labour shortages predicted to continue for the foreseeable future, there has been a re-emphasis on products and features that are geared to reducing labour needs.

Can you tell us about any areas where you’re currently making technical advances in safety, sustainability, environment?

Lucas Systems is a 25-year veteran in the space of providing technology to both improve the work life of warehouse workers as well as improve the performance of warehouse operations. Over the years we have continually evolved our technology to meet future market needs. Lucas software currently runs on a variety of Android smartphones, wearables, and mobile devices giving our customers the largest choice in wearables to run the software on. We are continually testing and certifying new compatible devices to utilise with our software.

Lucas has also continued to set the bar for technology that is intuitive and minimises the need for long and intensive worker training. For example, with our advanced voice recognition system, suppliers can implement a nearly immediate, no training voice system for new workers. The resulting benefit can be hundreds of training labour hours saved each year for the supplier.

Are you taking part in any major trade shows? Can you tell us what you’ll be exhibiting there?

We have been very active in the tradeshow space, especially during the early part of 2023. We have participated in IntraLogisteX 2023 and the Warehouse and Logistics Forum 2023, and will be at IWLEX in late May. We have been welcoming guests to our stand to discuss warehouse efficiency as well as leading standing room presentations around dynamic work optimisation solution, that reduces on-floor travel by up to 50%, as well as exploring myths around optimising the work of humans and robots in the DC.
