Bryant Plastics Ltd is based in West Yorkshire and was founded in 1973 by Barry Bryant, the father of the current MD Yvonne Bryant. They produce plastic Moving and Handling equipment for a huge range of industries and are the UK’s leading manufacturer and supplier of plastic linen/laundry cages.

Jackie Smith, Quality and Improvement Manager at Bryant Plastics Ltd speaks to Warehouse & Logistics News.

What are your best-known products/solutions/services?

Our best known products are probably our plastic laundry cages although we probably have a close runner up with our self levelling trucks/carts and we started 50 years ago with sliver cans for the wool industry, which we still produce today.

Which industry sectors are your customers in and which ones are growing fastest?

We supply a wide variety of sectors from laundries to the wool industry and a multitude in between. Our fastest growing sector is warehousing and supply where our self levelling barrows/trucks/carts are making a huge difference to the health and safety of the pickers and operatives.

What are your most recent product innovations?

Our latest innovation is a self levelling cage, this was developed along with an NHS Trust, there were a lot of sick days recorded due to back problems within the laundries, this was thought to be due to the repetative strain of lifting the laundry from carts and cages so we developed the self levelling cage which the staff trialled and loved because they could feel the difference in their backs almost immediately.

What are the major trends and developments affecting your category and your customers, and how are you responding?

Certainly the covid pandemic has affected a lot of the industries we supply, both adversely as in the hospitality and laundry sectors and beneficially as in the online shopping industry.

We have such a wide variety of customers in so many industry sectors that we were able to ride the storm as it were and come out the other side stronger than ever.

There are always developments in every industry, our philosophy is to work with our customers to improve and or amend our products to help them achieve their goals.

Can you tell us about any recent customer contracts and how you helped the customer meet their challenges?

Our most recent contract is with Amazon UK to supply self levelling units for their warehouses/ distribution centres. Again this is about improving the health and safety of staff and making things easier and safer.

How does business in 2022 compare to previous years? What’s your strategy for succeeding in the current climate?

Business is good for us, we are increasing our sales year on year which is fantastic. We have upgraded our moulding machinery in the last year enabling us to work better and more efficiently which has meant that the savings in the production have helped to mitigate the huge increase in the cost of raw materials and energy.

What’s the latest news from your company?

I think our news has been covered in your other questions, however we look forward to working and growing with our customers and hopefully we will be here for at least another 50 years working and evolving with our customers.

Can you tell us about any areas where you’re currently making technical advances?

Certainly with our new machinery we are ticking a lot of boxes in all of these areas, the fact that we use virgin plastic means that our products can be recycled and the plastic could still be in use 100 years from now.

Are you investing in staff training and skills development?

We know that the best way to keep our staff is to treat them well and help them develop and make them part of the Bryant Plastics family.

Are you taking part in any major trade shows? Can you tell us what you’ll be exhibiting there?

We have no plans, at the moment, to attend any trade shows this year.
