Smart systems, automation and state-of-the-art technology, based on the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence, promise greater scope for improving safety near the loading bay doors. However, as accident statistics make clear, these continue to be amongst the most dangerous places to work. Amongst the bigger trends we see today is the rise of the IoT, along with the development of smart devices. In the warehouse, smart devices help improve the visibility of people, vehicles and goods. Another important trend is the increasing adoption of automation. Three factors are accelerating this process: an increase in online orders, a labour shortage and innovations that make automation more affordable, according to Rite-Hite.

Hörmann UK have launched a new transparent, high speed spiral door, the HS5040 TurboLux and Turbolux S. With an impressive market leading opening speed of up to 4 M/s, the TurboLux range combines high speed operation with optimised transparency, strength, and durability, making the doors ideal for demanding warehouse and logistics applications where efficiency and visibility are key. The TurboLux range offers a pleasingly symmetrical and compact design, with transparent door laths manufactured from a clear, high-grade polycarbonate which provides high impact and breakage resistance.

An install by BID Group at North West Ambulance Services’ fleet maintenance centre in Lancashire, is a great example of investing in new equipment to improve long term business efficiency. The large access door on their facility originally just had an internal roller shutter door which was ineffective at keeping heat in and cold air out of the workshop. Installing an exterior KLIMATE High Speed Door with its fast acting operation, allowed quick access for vehicles at the touch of a button, rapidly closing again once inside.

Westgate are attending IntraLogisteX again this year, the UK’s largest intralogistics exhibition on 28-29th March at the NEC, Birmingham. They’ll be there to showcase their market-leading solution Flexiwall, that enables warehouse and logistics facilities to optimise their space and overcome issues with dust migration, multiple temperature requirements, storage and cross-contamination or tainting concerns. Established in 1977, Westgate are experienced in the design, supply and installation of industrial factory and warehouse partitions and external structure systems across the UK and Europe.

Union Industries has continued to support the upgrade of Ragus Sugars’ facilities in Slough with a further installation of its leading high-speed industrial doors. The latest two Bulldoors have replaced two poor performing doors at the factory’s main Vat Processing Room, that is in constant use by forklift trucks and personnel. The British-built Bulldoors are equipped to deal with the positive pressures imposed on them by their air-filtration systems along with around the clock use, increasing productivity due to its high speed and ease of use.

As loading bay doors are used more and more frequently, it’s great to know technology is being developed that is improving safety in that area.
