Derek Richardson, Business Development Manager at Hoval Ltd speaks to Warehouse & Logistics News.

What are your best-known products/solutions/services?

We have been well known as a UK boiler manufacturer since 1887. Now known for our complete solutions, offering small to very large heating and cooling systems, using a range of energy sources.

Hoval designs and manufactures commercial heating systems including steel shell, biomass and hydrogen-ready condensing boilers, as well as a wide range of diverse ventilation, heat recovery technologies and air source heat pumps. Hoval is recognised as a leading pioneer and innovator in environmentally-friendly heating and cooling systems.

Which industry sectors are your customers in and which ones are growing fastest?

We work with many different sectors. General HVAC, as well as mechanical consultants and contractors, central government, industrial, logistics, production, leisure facilities, hotels, energy centres, heat networks, education sector, healthcare, and multi-family homes.

We have seen an increase in enquiries from logistic and production companies, in particular sites with high-ceiling buildings. We are working with a number of companies looking to reduce carbon and become more energy efficient.

What are your most recent product innovations?

In 2021 we introduced the award winning hydrogen-ready UltraGas® 2 condensing boiler. This latest generation of gas condensing boilers, offers the option of using hydrogen as an alternative fuel to natural gas to help reduce carbon emissions.

September 2022 saw the launch of our latest heat pump, the Belaria® fit. Belaria® fit can provide outputs up to 1.4MW and up to 4MW in a hybrid system – depending on the required proportion of renewable energy.

We also added to our range of decentralised indoor climate units. These units are a tailor-made solution for any size space. Whether for small halls up to 6 metres high or large halls up to 25 metres high.

What are the major trends and developments affecting your category and your customers, and how are you responding?

With a huge focus on decarbonisation, Hoval not only launched the hydrogen-ready UltraGas 2 condensing boiler, we also shared some exciting news in October. Hoval is expanding its production capacity significantly with construction of new heat pump manufacturing facilities at its headquarters in Vaduz (Liechtenstein) and in Istebné (Slovakia). The investment required for this will amount to around EUR 60 million.

The new heat pump production facility at the Vaduz site began operations in September, and the first heat pumps produced here have already gone into distribution. The second facility at Istebné is set to start work in spring 2023 and a new state-of-the-art plant next to the existing premises, is scheduled to commence operations in early 2024, employing more than 500 people when complete.

Can you tell us about any recent customer contracts and how you helped the customer meet their challenges?

We recently worked with a large UK manufacturing plant who are looking to move away from using a traditional ventilation system that used both a water chiller to cool the workspace and steam boilers connected to heater batteries to heat the workspace. As part of their low carbon drive, the system has been switched to air source heat pumps connected to a decentralised ventilation system.

Can you tell us about any areas where you’re currently making technical advances?

Through research and implementation, Hoval have minimised the impact of our own activities on the environment. In addition to helping our customers save energy, we are now ISO 14001 certified. This achievement means that our environmental management system has met the specific requirements and we are improving our environmental performance.

Are you investing in staff training and skills development?

We continuously ensure our staff are trained and qualified to do their jobs well, but also to make sure they feel confident in their roles, and continue to develop and enjoy the work they do. Personal development is always welcomed at Hoval.

Are you taking part in any major trade shows? Can you tell us what you’ll be exhibiting there?

We will be exhibiting at Rolling Stock Network on 6th July at Derby Arena. We will be showcasing our climate system units, for which there is already interest in for rail manufacturing sites.
