Operators looking to rent or purchase a forklift need to consider the fuel type: whether it runs on diesel, LPG or electricity. LPG forklifts are suitable for both internal and external applications and can be fuelled in a matter of moments. They are usually cheaper to buy than diesel or electric versions, but they have the risk to carry higher maintenance costs as their fuel system can be complex. Diesel is still relatively cheap and diesel forklifts can be ideal for use in harsh outdoor environments as they’re durable and long-lasting while the maintenance and servicing costs are relatively low. However, diesel emissions make diesel forklifts unsuitable for use in enclosed or indoor areas. Electric forklifts do not have exhaust pipes, are virtually silent in operation and the cost of electricity is considerably lower than the cost of diesel or LPG. But electric forklifts are generally more expensive than their fossil-fuelled counterparts and can take longer to recharge, according to Fork Truck Direct.

International battery specialists Triathlon Battery Solutions swept to victory at the recent UKMHA Awards for Excellence, collecting the coveted Archie for Innovation Ancillary Product. The jury was impressed by the enhanced lead acid technology that combines the economy of conventional lead acid with the convenience and non-stop availability of rapid, opportunity charging normally associated with lithium-ion. Uniquely, QUASAR actually cools during charge and when working — preventing the heat build-up that destroys conventional batteries.

The Mitsubishi EDiA electric forklift has been selected to replace diesel at a busy bitumen manufacturing site in Gloucestershire. BituChem was looking to reduce its emissions and improve sustainability, and turned to local Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks dealer HFT for support with future-proofing its MHE fleet. BituChem’s new forklifts use lead acid batteries which can be charged after shifts to ensure high operational availability.

Flogas Britain, one of the UK’s leading liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) suppliers, has announced that it has been granted planning permission to construct a gas pipeline from Bristol Port into the nation’s largest above ground LPG storage terminal, at Avonmouth, near Bristol. Once complete, the pipeline will link the UK to a diverse, global supply of off-grid gas, providing security of supply and enhancing affordability for off-grid logistics businesses. It will also play an important role in the decarbonisation of off-grid Britain, in line with the Government’s 2050 net zero target.

Whether LPG, diesel or electric, there is a whole range of options for forklift operators to choose from.
