Paul Bates, UK Sales Director at EnerSys® Motive Power spoke to Warehouse & Logistics News.

Firstly, can you talk us through the different products and services EnerSys® provides?

EnerSys® is an industrial technology leader serving the global community with mission critical stored energy solutions that meet the growing demand for energy efficiency, reliability and sustainability.

At EnerSys®, our batteries range from the hardest-working flooded lead acid designs to the industry’s most advanced Thin Plate Pure Lead (TPPL) and Lithium-ion (Li-ion) technologies. Our high-frequency chargers feature modular, low-component designs to fit any performance and charging profile. Our programs and services can help manage whatever stored power technologies are used in a more efficient and cost-effective manner. These products are supported by our network of highly skilled service technicians throughout the UK.

What sets your company apart as a supplier in your sector?

Everything EnerSys® offers is informed by more than a century of knowledge that reflects our evolving, but constant mission: helping our customers make their operations more productive and profitable. At EnerSys®, our broad range of battery technologies covers everything from light-duty lift truck applications at retail stores, all the way up to the most demand-intensive, stringent 24/7 operations of central DCs that supply product to hundreds of those same stores every day. We offer a turnkey suite of products and services that aid operator compliance and streamline the maintenance process through the use of real-time data.

Which other countries do you operate in apart from the UK?

We operate in over 100 countries, employ over 11,000 people and have more than 10,000 customers globally. Our headquarters are in Reading, Pennsylvania, USA and we have global manufacturing facilities.

Which industry sectors are growing fastest for you?

We are seeing huge growth in warehouse automation with the likes of Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGV’s) and Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMR’s).

What business sectors are your customers in?

We have a whole host of sectors which we operate in, from supporting the forklift truck OEM’s and end-users in verticals such as, Logistics, Automotive, Food and Beverage, Retail and Electronics. EnerSys® Motive Power serves a wide array of industries, not just Forklift Trucks but also Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGV’s), Ground Support Equipment and Floor Care (Cleaning machines).

What are some of the biggest challenges that Fleet and Operations Managers face today?

We often find fleet managers who have made large decisions on equipment power because their vendor only sold one type of battery technology are left completely unaware they could mix a variety of chemistries to achieve true optimisation. This becomes even more problematic with vendors whose only offering is ultra-high-performance, meaning managers pay a premium price to outfit their entire fleet with that single technology, when only a handful of their units actually required it.

This is why EnerSys® provides a comprehensive range of battery and charger technologies, meaning we can optimise the total power mix for your operations – even if it means a hybrid approach of different technologies for different departments, equipment demands or a combination of both.

Which of your core products and solutions are you presenting at IMHX?

We are presenting our NexSys® family of virtually maintenance-free products.

Our NexSys® PURE product is an effective alternative to Lithium-ion (Li-ion) chemistry, based on Thin Plate Pure Lead (TPPL) technology enhanced by the addition of carbon. It’s a virtually maintenance-free solution, optimised for fast and opportunity-charging and ideal for medium to heavy duty applications.

We are also presenting our NexSys® iON (Li-ion) battery solutions that are built to the highest safety, design and manufacturing standards, and ideal for heavy-duty applications. NexSys® iON (Li-ion) batteries are available in a scalable range of sizes and configurations. They also feature fully integrated battery management controls that support greater safety, reliability and battery life.

Are you launching anything new at the show?

We are very excited to demonstrate our new EnSite™ modelling software to help our customers to make data-driven decisions. EnSite® modelling software is a highly-developed analytics tool exclusive to EnerSys®, that leverages data from your operations and lift equipment to simulate how various power systems would perform in your facility – before you invest both time and money in them. The system compares different battery and charger combinations to find the solution that supports the required throughput levels while minimising Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for each operation.

What do you see as the main benefits to your company from being involved with IMHX?

For us, our partnerships with the OEM’s are extremely important but I think this year IMHX will provide the opportunity for greater end-user interactions to discuss technologies that are truly unique to EnerSys®.

The last IMHX show was 2019. How has your business adapted to the changes since then?

EnerSys® has become more data-driven when approaching customer requirements. Our service coverage and offering, combined with true data capture is helping to educate customers on the right solution for their application.

Why should busy professionals from the warehouse and logistics industry take time out to visit your stand at IMHX?

At EnerSys® we believe in challenging the status quo.

We can audit your equipment’s actual power usage using our Wi-iQ® battery monitoring devices that monitor and record several battery parameters – including power usage, temperature, operator charging discipline and more.

The study data from actual equipment usage, coupled with our EnSite® modelling software, can identify an optimal technology to virtually eliminate maintenance while not being oversized (and overpriced) for the application. This process can also help facility managers that are looking to re-task their battery room space for more productive activities by identifying options to replace redundant batteries and changing equipment.

Our advanced data analysis capabilities and unequalled breadth of technology options can help you put power in motion – achieving true optimisation to drive productivity while minimising TCO.
