The Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) finally came into force in April. Here, Packaging Product Manager for Antalis Packaging, Ian Whitcombe, shares an insight into the products and services the team at Antalis Packaging has prepared to help customers minimise the impact of the PPT on their business.

“The starting point is to identify where and how plastic is being used”, explains Ian: “The biggest source of plastic packaging use for most packaging and logistics businesses is stretch film and, often, companies are using a lot more than they need to.”

Through its stretchCONSULT assessment, Antalis Packaging has helped customers to reduce their film usage by up to 70%, not only creating savings in terms of material costs but, now the PPT has been introduced, it can help reduce the impact of the £200-per-tonne tax, too.

In addition, Antalis has recently introduced a PPT-exempt film containing a minimum of 30% recycled plastic. Although Ian stresses that the key to making savings overall is to ensure the correct film for the pallet wrapping machine is being used, and that the machine is calibrated correctly, all of which forms part of the findings and recommendations of the stretchCONSULT assessment.

Antalis Packaging has also introduced several other new products that contain at least 30% recycled plastic, the threshold that makes them exempt from the PPT:

•White poly mailing bags – 75% recycled content

•Grey mailing bags – 100% recycled content

•Sealed Air Mail Lite and Master’In Mailers – bubble liner has 60% recycled content

•Hand stretch blown film – 30% recycled content

•Loosefill – 100% bio-based and recycled content

•Airspeed Renew air bags – 50% recycled content

Ian says: “Developing our range of PPT-exempt products is an ongoing process and we are continuing to work with suppliers to source and develop products, so we expect to announce new additions to the range over the coming months.”

To ensure the PPT doesn’t become a burden, Ian, recommends businesses speak to their packaging supplier as soon as possible to review and optimise their use of plastic packaging materials.

Information about the PPT and the products and services Antalis offers to help manage it, can be found in their new ‘Plastic Tax product exemption’ brochure, which is available on request.
