Exporta was founded in 1999 by current managing director Dale Paterson and his father. Over the last two decades Exporta has grown to one of the most prominent suppliers of plastic pallets and other product handling goods in the UK through offering unique customer service and next day nationwide delivery.

Dale Paterson, Managing Director at Exporta Global, speaks to Warehouse & Logistics News.

What are your best-known products/solutions/services?

Exporta is best known for providing product handling goods such as pallets, pallet collars, pallet boxes and various containers to support supply chain and warehousing operations.

Which industry sectors are your customers in and which ones are growing fastest?

We supply goods to a wide range of industries, anyone who needs to ship their goods from a warehouse can make use of our services. We’re really seeing eCommerce requirements increase with products such as picking bins becoming more popular along with more automated requirements in the pallet and crate categories.

What are the major trends and developments affecting your category and your customers, and how are you responding?

Plastic tax is coming this year and it could affect our customers depending on the type of packaging they use. 98% of our plastic pallets are made from 100% recycled material, so they will avoid any new taxes. We’re making sure it’s clear for our customers to understand what will, and won’t, be affected by this new tax.

How does business in 2022 compare to previous years? What’s your strategy for succeeding in the current climate?

There are opportunities everywhere to support new and growing trends such as the demand for returnable packaging and eCommerce businesses rapidly growing in number. Our strategy revolves around support. Support our customers with their needs and be prepared to adapt our range to support them in the best way to maximise their operation.

What’s the latest news from your company?

We’ve recently added to our operations team with Sarah Forbes joining as Procurement Manager. We feel this will have a very positive impact on our supply chain strength.

Can you tell us about any areas where you’re currently making technical advances?

Exporta are committed to increasing the sustainability of our organisation and recognise our responsibilities towards the environment, the communities in which we operate and our people in their workplaces.

In accordance with national and international commitments on climate change, we endeavour to continuously reduce the carbon intensity of the business, implement initiatives to cut our carbon emissions and improve the sustainability of our operations, and help our customers and suppliers to do the same. We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint year on year.

To do so, we are undertaking an initiative to start our journey towards carbon neutral and eventually to reach Net Zero and will be assisted by Auditel who have been engaged to support the carbon program focused on developing and delivering a comprehensive carbon management strategy in a programme of works designed to allow future verification for BSi PAS2060 (2014) “Specification for the demonstration of carbon neutrality”, the only internationally recognised standard.

Exporta already hold ISO9001 and for ISO14001. The management team believe that now is the time to measure our current footprint and begin the journey. The first step of this process will be to define and measure our Carbon Footprint, this will set our baseline from which all future carbon reductions will be measured against.

The second step will be to develop a path that will look to identify the options available to reduce carbon for Exporta, to prioritise them, and create a plan to implement them, and most importantly, allow the business to be able to then measure the outcome of the initiatives once completed. This is an important part of the requirements of PAS2060.

Are you taking part in any major trade shows? Can you tell us what you’ll be exhibiting there?

We’ll be at IMHX in September exhibiting our full range as well as some new products that are exclusive to the UK market and available solely through Exporta in the UK.
