It has been a challenging year for the industry, with Brexit and Covid-19 creating a ‘perfect storm’ of trial and uncertainty. In particular, doors are the one item we all touch every day; they form a physical barrier to keep us secure and safe, but how can risk be mitigated in the post-Covid world? “Something as simple as ensuring existing door hardware is being cleaned properly with anti-bacterial detergent and water solution can make all the difference,” says Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens, Head of Commercial Operations at the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF). In areas of high traffic, products that enable doors to be opened without a person having to use their hands (e.g. using arm and foot pulls) can also be an easy and cost-effective solution. DHF has also recommended products that feature anti-microbial surfaces, which can dramatically reduce the risk of transmission, and hold-open door controls can help keep doors open at all times, except in the case of an emergency.

Congratulations to Union Industries, the UK’s leading manufacturer of high-speed industrial doors, which has completed the supply and installation of six of its rapid-roller doors at Premier Foods’ Carlton bakery in Barnsley. The food manufacturer had a requirement for replacement of internal and external doors and opted to have two types of rapid-roller doors from Union Industries’ market-leading range installed – the Bulldoor and Matadoor. The Bulldoor is the most versatile and popular door in the range, for internal or external, heavy traffic doorways.

Interesting to hear how Hörmann supplied a trade partner on the Isle of Man with 9 Hörmann SPU42 sectional doors that were installed as part of the refurbishment of the main depot of Britain’s only and oldest surviving Horse Tramway. Celebrating its 145th anniversary in 2021, the Douglas Bay Horse Tramways is an iconic tourist attraction, with 27 horses powering many of the original fleet of cars that remain in operation. Well done to EFAFLEX for installing 32 high-speed doors at the recently completed logistics centre for Budweiser brewery. The doors had to be fast, robust, and reliable, as they are placed under huge performance pressure, completing over 250,000 opening cycles per year. Opening at speeds up to 3 metres per second, the turbo doors help ensure the temperatures remain constant in the production halls and storage areas.

The P & M Group Limited, trading as ISD Solutions, has signed a distribution contract with Dutch high performance door manufacturer Salco BV. The two companies, which have worked together on projects in the UK and Australia, have signed a deal for supply and installation as well as ongoing service and maintenance. This will see a nationwide team of 20 service engineers providing the first specialist maintenance national network of these high value assets, hundreds of which are in operation around the UK.

It’s great to see so many doors being installed. We are confident that safety and security will continue to be a top priority.
