Trade flows have become somewhat smoother since the January headlines about post-Brexit disruption to food trade, but cold chain operators and their customers continue to work determinedly through the ongoing challenges. Our industry is also preparing for another period of significant disruption when the new arrangements for imports from the EU come into force later this year, according to Cold Chain Federation Chief Executive Shane Brennan. At the same time, as the UK continues to edge its way out of lockdown, sectors which have been so severely restricted such as food service are gradually moving back to full operations, and the cold chain is pulling out all the stops to meet their customers’ changing needs.

Well done to Thermo King, which has announced the launch of its new battery pack designed specifically for the E-200 fully-electric refrigeration units. Manufactured by Thermo King, the new lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery is available in 1.8kWh and 3.6KWh versions. Combined with the E-200 units, the battery pack creates a zero emissions transport refrigeration solution that ensures an unbroken cold chain even while the driver stops for delivery, break or needs to turn off the vehicle for longer.

In 2017, NewCold Advanced Cold Logistics designed a bespoke automated pallet handling solution which was installed at customer facilities with similar unloading solution at their Wakefield facility. The company, now says that they are working with customers to look at installing similar technology at production facilities and their new site in Corby, due to open in Q1 2022. The automated loading facility currently implemented effectively bridges the gap between the deep-frozen production or storage environment and NewCold’s auto-loading 44-pallet double-deck trailers.

Specialising in low-temperature warehousing and logistics, ICE Solution is one of the most modern cold storage facilities in its region of Hungary. To help its operations run efficiently, ICE Solution requires equipment capable of performing in the extreme cold. ICE Solution turned to its trusted dealer Pagát Gold Zrt, the exclusive dealer of Yale materials handling equipment in Hungary, which recommended a fleet of 13 Yale trucks.

It is inspiring to see the resilient, flexible cold storage industry keeping pace, responding day to day to the unexpected, and planning ahead for those changes it can foresee: new global supply chains, increased demand for last mile deliveries, net zero regulations, and increasing demand for cold storage.
