As the national accreditation scheme for forklift truck Thorough Examinations, CFTS is committed to delivering quality local service to national standards.

Geoff Martin
Chairman at CFTS

CFTS was created in 2004 to overcome the confusion that often came from forklift owners and operators not knowing whether their truck met with LOLER 98 and PUWER 98 regulations. We therefore designed a Thorough Examination standard that covered both, enabling employers to be confident in their compliance with the law.

Perhaps now more than ever, we find that employers and forklift operators really do appreciate the advantages of having their forklift checked for LOLER 98 and PUWER 98 at the same time, under one comprehensive inspection. Not only do they want the reassurance that a CFTS Thorough Examination brings, they also understand that they have a responsibility to make sure their trucks are fully covered. The industry’s continued recognition of the importance of Thorough Examinations is extremely encouraging, and is also reflected in the growth of our membership.

A strong network

More and more companies that provide service and maintenance for forklifts are expanding their offering to include Thorough Examinations, and our membership is at an all-time high. The far-reaching CFTS network of accredited companies now includes over 600 member depots around the UK, ensuring that customers receive a truly local service.

These companies are supported by our Technical Managers: Adrian White (North), who joined our organisation at the start of 2019, and Matthew Kennedy (South). Both Matthew and Adrian were on hand at IMHX 2019 to talk visitors through the ins and outs of Thorough Examinations, and we have had a lot of interest off of the back of what proved to be a very successful event.

Electronic on the rise

Around 18 months ago, CFTS launched Protean electronic packs for Thorough Examinations, as an option for our members. With electronic Thorough Examinations, companies can go paperless, and can reduce the associated admin time of processing physical forms. For larger companies with multiple engineers, who might each produce a great deal of paperwork, electronic packs are extremely beneficial. This past year, 15 percent of all CFTS documentation packs ordered were electronic. It’s a huge leap from when we first introduced them, and we will therefore be extending the availability of electronic packs by partnering with more software companies that are well-established in the fork truck industry. CFTS has no plans to phase out paper-based Thorough Examinations, and we will continue to offer these while there is a demand.

We have been very inspired by the industry’s increasing engagement with Thorough Examinations and look forward to welcoming more members to CFTS throughout 2020.
