The specialist division of asset management and engineering services provider Briggs Equipment, Briggs Defence was among 623 organisations from the UK, Africa, Asia and the Middle East to win an International Safety Award for their performance during the 2017 calendar year.

Steve Bayliss of Briggs Defence received the accolade at the International Safety Awards scheme’s gala dinner held at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel on April 27. He said: “We take the welfare of our personnel very seriously, especially since they can be deployed to nonfighting zones overseas or called upon to operate in challenging conditions at sea.

“It’s reassuring to know that our exacting systems and procedures meet the British Safety Council’s selection criteria and we’re delighted that this, together with our ongoing investment in maintaining a robust health and safety regime, has been recognised with a prestigious International Safety Award.”

Now in their 60th year, the International Safety Awards celebrate organisations from around the world which have demonstrated to the satisfaction of the scheme’s independent judges their commitment to preventing workplace injuries and work-related ill health during the previous calendar year.

Mike Robinson, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, congratulated Briggs Defence on its success in winning an International Safety Award 2018 with a Pass, saying: “The British Safety Council commends Briggs Defence on their achievement. The award is in recognition of their commitment and efforts to keep their employees and workplaces free of injury and ill health.

“The long list of winners of the International Safety Awards demonstrates that an increasing number of companies recognise that the sensible and proportionate management of health and safety risks is a business enabler. It benefits workers, their families, businesses and society as a whole. By celebrating and sharing the achievements of the winners of the International Safety Awards, we encourage businesses all over the world to follow their lead and place employees’ health and safety at the heart of their business.

“Our warmest congratulations to Briggs Defence. All of those working at Briggs Defence should be rightly proud of their achievement.”

The International Safety Award reinforces Briggs Defence’s commitment to protecting its employees from the risk of injury and ill health. Following a rigorous programme of work to update its management system, Briggs Defence attained the standards required for accreditation to ISO 14001:2015 (Environment) and OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety). Its system complies with ISO 14001:2015 and workplace health and safety will be fully integrated following the introduction of ISO 45001:2018, the world’s first occupational health and safety international standard, which replaces OHSAS 18001.
