The sector and regional categories were hotly contested this year, with family-owned businesses across the UK vying for the top spots. But it was J.R. Rix & Sons Ltd and its diverse range of businesses, from fuel distribution to crew support vessels, which took home the award for ‘Transport & Logistics’ family business of the year.

Rix received the accolade during an awards ceremony held in the Mayfair Hotel in London on Thursday, June 11. They were also finalists and runners up in the ‘Yorkshire’ Family Business of the Year category.

Tim Rix, managing director of J.R. Rix and Sons, said the win was a tremendous achievement for the company.

He said: “We are very proud to have won the Transport and Logistics Family Business of the Year award, particularly when we were running against so many other successful businesses from across the country.

“As a company we have always sought to keep ahead of developments in business practices, the markets we operate in and the developing markets where we see opportunities, as demonstrated by our successful diversification into crew transfer vessels for the offshore wind farm industry. It is fantastic to have our achievements recognised by the Family Business United awards.”

J.R. Rix & Sons Ltd’s is a fifth-generation family company that has operated from across the UK from its Yorkshire headquarters for more than 140 years.

The group’s activities range from commercial, residential and marine fuel distribution, fuel cards, ship owning, stevedoring, warehousing and off shore wind farm support to holiday home manufacturing, car retail and property, through a number of subsidiaries.

Paul Andrews, Founder and Managing Director of Family Business United, said: “The Rix submission was outstanding, not only in the way that it was put together but the way the values of the family shone through. A strong heritage is fantastic but does not secure a future and Rix is continuing to evolve, firmly focused on the growth and diversity within the business today.

“These awards were created to champion the family business sector in the UK and to recognise the contribution made by family firms to the UK economy and the communities in which they operate. Rix are worthy winners of the Transport & Logistics Family Business of the Year 2015 and will undoubtedly be great ambassadors for the family business sector going forward.”
