FrontIn this issue we have scheduled features on two vital parts of the modern warehouse operation, Doors and Curtains and Fork Trucks, in which maximising productivity and efficiency goes hand in hand with taking a proactive approach to safety.

As we went to press the Fork Lift Truck Association had just completed its 11th National Fork Lift Truck Safety Conference, sponsored by Briggs Equipment, with Warehouse & Logistics News as media sponsor. We’ll report on the Conference in a forthcoming issue. Meanwhile we hope everyone who attended the event went home with plenty of ideas about how to implement a culture of safe forklift operations in their business, in which every employee goes home safe after each working day.

Briggs Equipment and other fork lift suppliers are happy to advise end users on how to maximise forklift safety. Door and curtain suppliers can make a difference to workplace safety too. As the Door Loading Service UK (DLS) article in the Doors & Curtains feature points out, leaving a steel roller shutter or sectional door open invites people to use it as a pedestrian access, which can cause Health and Safety issues where fork lift trucks are operating. To counter this, DLS fit a light curtain as standard on all doors over 3 metres high, offering a safety barrier on both sides of the curtain, in which any movement under the door makes the curtain open until the obstacle is moved.

Safety is also the theme of this issue’s front page lead story about the Rack Group’s innovative Rack Aid® management system, which addresses the legal issues associated with inspections, maintenance, repairs, protection and training with industrial storage equipment. EU standard EN 15635 requires employers using pallet racking and other static steel storage equipment to appoint a named person responsible for storage equipment safety. This person is given responsibility for the storage equipment’s safe working condition of and takes charge of inspection, maintenance, repairs, protection and training. It’s a big ask. However under the Rack Aid® system, Rack Group will undertake full independent inspections as required by EN 15635 and carry out specialised bespoke maintenance and repair programmes to replace damaged components and enhance the life cycle of the storage equipment.
