This cold storage depot in the north of Scotland required a lighting solution to reduce the maintenance and running costs being incurred due to the continuous operation of the depot.

The client had researched the market through a local electrical specialist was introduced to the Dialight product range through Ocip Energy Limited. Once they had trialled a single 150W LED High Bay, the client was immediately interested in exploring a deployment in the entire cold storage unit.

Summary

Number of fixtures – 64

Replaced – 400W Metal

Halide High Bay with 150W LED HB2

Mounting height – 9 metres

Energy reduction – 70%

Location – Northern Scotland

Following a period of consultation the client purchased and installed 64 x 150W HB2 High Bay lights and has mounted them in a number of cold storage chambers within their Scottish supply base.

The key considerations in deciding on the LED High Bays for the cold store facility were:

• Low Maintenance – no one wants to change light bulbs in -20ºC;

• Long product life and impressive extended warranties

• Improved quality of light;

• Double the energy savings, LEDs emit virtually no heat. Conventional lighting creates heat, which needs to be cooled;

• Immediate re-strike. Conventional lighting is slow to re-strike in a cold environment;

• Options are limited for lighting, since there are constraints to the use of fluorescent lighting in such extreme low temperatures

Essentially, it is important to consider the true cost of ownership, so that energy calculations take into account the additional cooling required to offset the heat generated by conventional lighting. For every Watt of energy consumed in lighting a cold store with conventional lighting, there is a equivalent Watt of cooling required. Your energy consumption effectively doubles.
